The development of future Australian industries based on polymer electronics is tangible. The prohibitive establishment costs mean that there is effectively no Australian conventional semiconductor manufacturing industry. However, polymer electronic devices are simple to manufacture with low fabrication costs. As such, the commercial barriers to the development of an Australian soft electronics industry are much lower. Internationally, soft electronics is developing apace and securing a soft electronics industry in Australia requires the urgent development of an Australian skill base in fabricating soft electronic devices. This project offers the opportunity of establishing a significant capability in soft electronic device fabrication.Read moreRead less

Rare-earth transition-metal intermetallics are among the most important magnetic materials, providing the World's strongest magnet with extensive applications. Despite these impressive technological and commercial developments numerous aspects of rare-earth magnetism remain to be developed and resolved. The two innovative topics we shall research are the critical interplay between the rare-earth and transition-metal sublattices in ternary compounds, enabling us to understand complex compounds, and exploration of a set of quaternary compounds we have recently discovered, thus opening new areas of rare-earth magnetism.Read moreRead less
Strong electron correlations in quantum materials. The project will fundamentally advance the knowledge base towards the development of novel quantum materials. The project will reveal mechanisms of strong electron correlations and develop methods to use these correlations to enhance desirable properties of materials.
Elastically controlled magnetoelectric transduction in thin film multilayers. Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials have attracted significant attention and exhibited potential in many applications such as storage memories, solid-state light sources and a range of smart chemical and biological sensors. This proposal seeks to investigate the behaviour of these materials in layered form, where an imposed mechanical traction induces novel combinations of ferroelectric and magnetic properties.
