The triple bottom line of social, economic and environmental imperatives forms the accepted ingredients of sustainability. While the economic and environmental dimensions have been relatively well researched, there is insufficient understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions and how these determine environmental and health outcomes. The interactions between the dimensions are also poorly understood. While there are some researchers in this field, they have tended to work in isolation. The development of a resourced interdisciplinary network to facilitate collaboration will increase the contribution and innovativeness of their collective research and contribute to understanding socio-economic determinants of dynamic regions and healthy rural communities.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean Research. This multidisciplinary proposal has four integrated research themes which enhance existing Antarctic research. The proposal will build new polar research capability in Tasmania to secure and reinforce its recognition as a global leader in Antarctic and Southern Ocean science; develop a marine technology hub; leverage co-investment with national and overseas agencies; and further establish Tasmania as a gateway for Antarctic research, education, innovation and logistics. The initiative will bolster Australia's Antarctic program via integration of novel understanding of ice-shelf and ice sheet contributions to present-day sea level change, and new perspectives on polar marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles, and sea-ice forecasting.

This program aims to deliver unprecedented research capability for securing Antarctic environments in the face of uncertain change. By integrating a highly skilled team with new approaches and breakthrough technologies, the program anticipates discovery science, enhanced environmental forecasting and optimised decision-making to advance Australia’s position as an influential Antarctic nation. Expected outcomes include better environmental management, unparalleled strategic decision-support for an effective Antarctic Treaty, and new minds to address Antarctica’s new challenges. Anticipated benefits are the means to transform environmental forecasting and management in the Antarctic, for Australia, and to the advantage of global security.
