This research proposal will identify changes in liver-secreted proteins during the development of fatty liver, and in the transition from fatty liver to the more advanced form of liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Understanding the differences in protein secretion between NASH patients and patients with normal/fatty liver will provide the opportunity to identify disease biomarkers that could be determined from a blood sample. This will provide a major shift in clinical care.

Summary
Children with kidney disease suffers from profound ill-health and adopt a restrictive lifestyle, including dietary restriction, absences from school and other co-curricular activities. New knowledge and interventions are needed to address the pressing needs including of these children and their caregivers. Summary
I developed and am leading a program of nutrition research that is making a substantial difference and contribution to the literature that will eventually make a difference to the lives of children and adolescents. The focus of this work will be on the nutritional risk factors for mental health and development of the metabolic syndrome that includes cardiovascular and diabetes risk.
If stem cell transplantation is to be useful to repair brain injury, advancement must be made to improve the delivery, survival and differentiation of transplanted cells so that they can sufficiently integrate into the host brain. Here, self-assembling peptides will be developed to provide physical and biochemical support for stem cells and neurones in cell culture (which may be useful for drug discovery) and following transplantation into the injured brain.

Summary
The inability of muscle and liver to utilise sugar from the blood is a major problem that contributes to the development of obesity and diabetes. How these problems occur is unknown. The goal of my research is to identify what causes the muscle and liver problem, and whether fixing these problems will reduce obesity and diabetes. Since the number of people with obesity and diabetes is predicted to double over the next decade, we need to understand the cause of these diseases.

An established treatment for blood cancers involves a stem cell transplant to replace the blood stem cells that are damaged by radiation and chemotherapy. However, treatment success is limited with advancing age due to multiple defects in the immune system. We will use new technologies to investigate how the ageing immune system copes with stem cell transplantation and explore new methods for improving recovery and immunity after HSCT.
