New Islamic public spheres are emerging around the world, raising questions about their capacity to facilitate democratic outcomes. This project aims to establish whether and to what extent Indonesia's Islamic public spheres facilitate deliberation. This longitudinal study of female Chinese students in Australian universities is the first to trace in detail these students’ subjective experience of their journeys from China to Australia and their post-graduation destinations. Using an innovative framework of the concept of ‘regions of memory’ this project examines how human rights activists located within and outside Indonesia use memory for the purposes of achieving human rights outcomes.
