Palliative care patients and their carers have specific information needs relating to the nature and progress of their disease, their symptoms and their current and pending quality of life. However, their ability to find and use information relies on many factors such as individual skills and experiences and how information is presented and made available. eHealth literacy is a measure of the mix of skills required by consumers to successfully access and understand palliative care information. Readability is one aspect of eHealth literacy and readability scales can be used to identify how effective websites are in providing appropriate written information for palliative care consumers. Parenting+ Improving Health And Service-use Outcomes Through Health Literacy Training For New Parents: An Effectiveness-implementation Hybrid Trial

Summary
The Parenting+ project will evaluate an educational program for socio-economically and culturally diverse new parents. The study will assess the impact of the program on parents' health literacy, parent and infant health and psychosocial outcomes and health service use over one year. It additionally will identify key characteristics and reproducible steps in the successful implementation of the program in order to support wider adoption by other health services.
Some patients with chronic disease struggle to look after their condition at home. An educational approach called teach-back has been shown to improve people’s understanding of how to manage their condition. Teach-back is not commonly used in Australia, but is recommended by key policy documents. This project will develop and test a process for integrating teach-back into pre-discharge care of hospital patients with chronic conditions, by training nurses to act as teach-back mentors.
Optimising Engagement In Cardiac Secondary Prevention: A Health Literacy Approach

Summary
Many people struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle after a heart attack. Health literacy is the ability to understand and use health information for better health, but little is known about its role in long-term behaviour change. This research will follow 408 people over 2 years to identify whether health literacy impacts upon lifestyle change after a heart attack. The study will also co-design interventions with consumers and clinicians that aim to improve people’s health literacy.
Novel Approaches To Address Barriers To Care For Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer

Summary
In Australia, one young person aged 15-29 is diagnosed with cancer every six hours. Psychological disorders are also most likely to be first experienced in this life stage. This research addresses three understudied issues for this vulnerable group: health literacy (how well they understand and manage health information) at diagnosis, psychological adjustment after cancer treatment completion, and distress, communication and decision making when a young person’s cancer cannot be cured.

This Partnership Project will evaluate the National Prisons Hepatitis Education Program, which aims to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of healthcare providers, correctional officers, and prisoners regarding hepatitis C (HCV) and its treatment. This initiative is a key element of the national approach to achieve the World Health Organisation goal of elimination of HCV as an ongoing public health concern by 2030.
