Online linguistic exploration: deeper, faster, broader language documentation. This project will develop a new online mode for collaborative linguistic research. Linguists will be able to harness the power of natural language processing techniques for their study of the world's languages. A demonstration system will be developed, permitting linguists to locate examples of syntactic constructions in a large database of parsed text, and to explore similarities across different languages. Linguists will be able to harness the power of natural language processing techniques for their study of the world's languages. A demonstration system will be developed, permitting linguists to locate examples of syntactic constructions in a large database of parsed text, and to explore similarities across different languages. The project will also encompass a selection of minority languages for which only a small amount of data is available.

The Human Communication Network promotes interdisciplinary research in speech, language, and sound by and between humans and machines. The network connects leading and emerging researchers across disciplines, exploits previously unrecognised intersections, supports interdisciplinary graduate training and exchanges, provides database storage infrastructure, and consults with industry and government to set, not follow, research agendas. By generating an explosion of new approaches and knowledge, the network will build Australia's reputation as a leader in communication science and technology via advances in automatic speech recognition, distress call monitoring, hearing prostheses, web interfaces, and data retrieval and data mining systems.

An Intelligent Search Infrastructure for Language Resources on the Web . Language occupies a central role on the web: most content is expressed in language, and most access takes place via natural language search. Today, investigation of human language depends on access to this vast store of language data. This project will develop new infrastructure for accessing language resources, namely a language-aware search engine. Language technologies will be employed to classify web content, and a special search keyword 'lang:' will constrain search results to be in the specified language. The system will be integrated with major language archives in Australia and overseas, and deployed on the high performance computing infrastructure at Melbourne University's Advanced Research Computing Centre.
