Summary
Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) can usually be treated effectively with long-term tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy. Remarkably, rare patients who achieve excellent responses can stop treatment altogether without relapsing. Detailed studies of these patients in terms of their genetic background, the biology of their leukaemia and their immune response may help us understand how this is possible, leading to new therapeutic approaches to make treatment-free remission more widely achievable.

Leukaemia is a devastating form of blood cancer affecting both young and old. We aim to understand the mechanisms of uncontrolled cell growth associated with acute myeloid leukaemia. We focus on the role of key growth regulators that are abnormally active in the critical leukaemia stem cells. Understanding the biological and molecular properties of these cells is of considerable importance for development of the next generation of leukaemia therapies.

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) patients are currently treated with chemotherapeutics and despite their success at achieving disease remission these responses are often short lived, resulting in relapse and death. We have identified sphingosine kinase 1 as a new drug target in AML. This proposal aims to examine the role of targeting sphingosine kinase 1 in combination with new targeted therapies in patient samples and preclinical mouse models of AML.

Blood and lymphatic vessels are vital components of the cardiovascular system. Abnormalities in the growth and development of these vessels are associated with human disorders including cancer and cardiovascular disease. The focus of this application is to characterise the role of the ubiquitin protein ligase Nedd4 in vascular development, with the aim of identifying targets to which novel therapeutics for the treatment of blood and lymphatic vascular diseases could be generated.
Early career teacher induction: Supporting precarious teachers. This project aims to investigate the ways in which Australian induction policies support precariously employed early career teachers to effectively manage student classroom behaviour. This project expects to generate new knowledge of workforce development and induction experiences of early career teachers employed on casual and short-term contracts. A more highly qualified VET teaching workforce is likely to lead to improvements in quality; however there is currently no firm evidence to establish this link, as the 2011 Productivity Commission report on the VET workforce pointed out.
