The proposed study will track the careers of the cohort and examine any changes in attitudes to policing and professionalism since the original study. The proposed study will track the careers of the cohort and examine any changes in attitudes to policing and professionalism since the original study. It will be the first study of its kind in Australia and is expected to further the researcher's already recognised theoretical and practical contribution to the understanding of police culture and its relationship with the socio-political conditions of policing.Read moreRead less
Improving the analysis of trace DNA samples in forensic science and human identification. The introduction of DNA technology into forensic science has revolutionised this profession, by generating a very high level of individual discrimination through genetic profiling. However, there are still many crime scenes from which it is proving difficult to obtain sufficient DNA sample for such powerful profiling. This project will develop modifications to current techniques and procedures, as well as new novel approaches, to improve the targeting, collection, extraction and typing of trace amounts of biological samples. These results will significantly improve our ability to fight crime, especially high volume crime, act as a deterrent, and assist in disaster victim identification.Read moreRead less

To what extent do these areas of regulation have the capacity to bring about changes in the culture, policies and operating procedures of organisations? What obstacles that impede organisations? attempts to comply with the regulatory requirements? The project will result in the usual academic publications, and workshops for the government agencies administering the legislation involved in the study.Read moreRead less

The nature and effectiveness of Australian regulatory responses to terrorism, the Esso Longford Explosion and the collapse of HIH Insurance. Industrial disasters, terrorist attacks and corporate collapses create increased demands by Australians for safety and financial security. This project will trace the effects of three such events on regulatory frameworks and compliance efforts by our airports, ports and major hazard facilities. It will ascertain whether regulatory reform following disasters does increase protection for Australians, or whether multiple and competing demands mean that significant gaps are created. This work will be an invaluable resource for investigators, regulators and policymakers charged with preventing corporate disasters and terrorist attacks. Read moreRead less

Australian overseas aid has recently stressed funding better governance and security as pre-requisites to poverty reduction and economic development. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a long term legal assistance programme designed to strengthen the rule of law in a fragile state such as Cambodia. Police reform in fragile states has often failed and lessons learnt by the CCJAP over the past 10 years will contribute to our knowledge about the best practices and strategies needed to improve security and governance in fragile states. Capacity building efforts to improve international law enforcement cooperation, especially in regard to counter-terrorism and transnational crime, will benefit from this review.Read moreRead less

Moreover, the transnational nature of trafficking crimes means that international cooperation in law enforcement is increasingly common. Understanding how Chinese agencies deal with serious drug crime is important for agencies such as the Australian Federal Police. In addition to this, Australia has established a bi-lateral human rights dialogue with China. Understanding how Chinese courts punish drug crime using the death penalty will enhance Australia's ability to engage with and respond to key issues in law and human rights in the region.Read moreRead less
