It will examine whether such affinities can outweigh differences and provide the basis for local belonging in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods. The Affinities Project turns the current emphasis on difference on its head. Using museums to counter racism and increase acceptance of diversity among young people. Although little is known about the topic, racism is a significant issue for young Australians. This project will reveal how high school students and their teachers understand racism, diversity and identity. It will also determine how museum programs can reduce racism and increase acceptance of diversity among high school students and their teachers.
An exploration of the frequency, outcomes, enablers and constraints of bystander anti-racism. Bystander anti-racism involves ordinary people speaking up and taking prosocial action when witnessing racism. This project will develop empirical understandings of this underexplored, yet potentially powerful, form of anti-racism, including its frequency, the outcome of action, and factors that enable and constrain bystander anti-racism.
Community Policing and Refugee Settlement in Regional Australia - A Case Study of Tasmania. This project will describe, analyse and theorise police-refugee relations in regional Australia. It compares refugee settlement in three rural/regional areas in Tasmania through the lens of police-refugee relations. In particular, it will identify ways in which community policing can enhance settlement experiences and reduce crime among refugees in regional Australia. Cyber-racism and community resilience. Racism has become a significant source of social stress, facilitated through the internet, undermining community cohesion. This project will document perpetrators’ creation of racist content, internet users’ exposure to cyber-racism, the capacity of regulation to manage the impact, and how social media can help communities to resist cyber-racism.
Filipino-Australians: Networks, Identities, Communities. Today, Australia has over 100,000 Filipino-origin citizens. There are growing trade, diplomatic and security relations between Australia and the Philippines. Both nations have English as a common language, comparable educational systems, and respective elective affinities with the US. Across the Pacific first world nations, modern Filipino diasporas are utilising dynamic forms of knowledge and business practice and as a result are developi ....Filipino-Australians: Networks, Identities, Communities. The diffusion of protest across national boundaries disrupts official routine, threatens state power, and raises new questions about global citizenship.
