Nodal Governance and Human Security. Australia is in a region where a number of countries fail to provide their people with security in basic areas such as health and community security. Australia is in a region where a number of countries fail to provide their people with security in basic areas such as health and community security. Understanding the security problems of Australia's neighbours is vital, but not easy. This pathbreaking project will help Australians involved in working with these countries to gain an interrelated understanding of the problems facing our neighbours. The benefits that flow from this include an improved planning capacity for dealing with security issues in the region, better use of the resources that we provide, and strengthened relationships with our neighbours. We will do this while placing Australia at the head of an emerging, highly exciting field of study centred on human security.Read moreRead less

Based on evidence that effective governance is a necessary precursor to Indigenous communities’ economic, social and cultural outcomes, this project aims to strengthen Australian Indigenous communities by learning and sharing lessons about sustainable and effective Indigenous governance. In collaboration with three Aboriginal communities in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales that are differentially engaged in Indigenous governance processes, the project aims to identify innovation in community governance, test the usefulness of Australian governance assessment tools, and foster an Indigenous Australian and global network to share successful strategies. In doing so, the project contributes to an emerging theory of Indigenous nation building.Read moreRead less

But recent evidence suggests that marriage patterns have been transformed. Understanding the Revolution in Married Life in Australia. Marriage has traditionally been viewed as the bedrock institution of society. But recent evidence suggests that marriage patterns have been transformed. People are marrying less, and those who do are marrying later, separating more, and often marrying after cohabiting and having children. What are the consequences of these changes for people's experience of these relationships and for other outcomes, such as relationship quality, life satisfaction and views about marriage? This project will provide important information that will enable greater understanding of changing family patterns and provide critical data for policy-makers concerned with the social welfare of individuals and the changing role of the family in Australia today.Read moreRead less

Indigenous people are the most disadvantaged group in Australia with significant disparity in almost all indicators of Indigenous disadvantage. Such disparity, which is widening in relation to some indicators, is a matter of national concern. Australian and North American research is remarkably consistent in identifying the connection between the governance capacity of Indigenous communities and sustained economic development and social outcomes. This project will build on existing research to provide insight into processes, practical governance tools and best practice models to develop culturally legitimate frameworks for Indigenous communities for achievement of their economic, social and cultural aspirations.Read moreRead less
