    Establishing a missing link between the global nitrogen and carbon cycles - anaerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification. Methane is a strong greenhouse gas and currently accounts for 20 per cent of the total radioactive forcing in the atmosphere. This project investigates a previously unrecognized microbial process that oxidizes methane before it reaches the atmosphere. The project will deliver knowledge support to sustainable environmental management.

The project will generate a unique, research-ready database that will detail every land transaction in rural NSW over a period of ten years, and analyse these data in light of complementary datasets and a series of in-depth interviews with land-owners and key stakeholders. The project expects to transform national understanding of rural land-ownership change, and promote best practice decision making.

In many catchments during the Millennium Drought, streamflow generation was less than expected and hydrologic models performed poorly. This can inform future land use planning and development at local, regional, and national levels.

This project aims to develop a novel electrospun nanofibre membrane distillation membrane to economically concentrate the brine and to develop .... Although social equity (equitable distribution of benefits or costs to people) can be critical to conservation success, it can compromise other goals, leading to inadequate or expensive cons .... Reconciling the triple bottom line of social equity, economic return, and environmental benefits in conservation decision making. In biodiversity conservation, achieving social equity along with economic and environmental benefits - the triple bottom line – is commonly seen as the key to successful outcomes. Although social equity (equitable distribution of benefits or costs to people) can be critical to conservation success, it can compromise other goals, leading to inadequate or expensive conservation outcomes. This project will determine how, and in what cases, equity influences the probability of success of a conservation plan or policy and, in turn, economic and environmental benefits. Further, it will explicitly incorporate social equity into spatial prioritisation approaches to more accurately identify triple bottom line solutions to conserve biodiversity.

Realistic predictions of wetland status will be achieved through the development and integration of an ecohydrological model and a water management decisions model. Application of the tools will improve existing decision support models to help analyse the effects of individual local management decisions on the long-term evolution of the system and the effects of changes in operation policies and climate over the long term. The project will provide critical new information for the improved prediction of wetlands evolution and as a consequence better management.
