Preconception Determinants Of Child Health And Development: A 4-year Follow Up Of Offspring Born To The Australian Temperament Project

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,065,799.00
    Summary
This project will follow offspring born to a large population cohort study that has tracked the mental health and wellbeing of around 2000 participants across 30 years prior to parenthood. An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Asthma In Children

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $36,174.00
    Summary
It is important to understand whether physical activity can prevent asthma, or whether asthma prevents children from being physically active, as this will influence the decisions we make with regard to the management of both childhood asthma and childhood activity. This work uses data from two studies of Australian children to tease out which path is the most important path to target when trying to increase physical activity levels and improve the respiratory health of children and adolescents.

Genes, Biology And Environment In The Development Of Substance Use And Mental Health Disorders

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $475,910.00
    Summary
Substance use and mental health disorders are major public health problems which cause long-term disabilities, poor health and early mortality. Addressing these problems requires a better understanding of the genetic, biological and environmental factors leading to these disorders. This research program represents a unique opportunity to increase our knowledge of the origins and mechanisms behind these disorders and significantly contribute to improved substance use and mental health prevention .... The Association Between Disability Acquisition, Socio-economic Disadvantage And Health: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Trajectories Of Disability

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $92,539.00
    Summary
People with disabilities are more likely to live in disadvantaged circumstances and experience poorer health and wellbeing than people without disabilities. The aim of my research is to contribute a nuanced, causally-robust longitudinal analysis of the relationships between disability, socio-economic disadvantage and health. I will model disability trajectories to characterise the diversity of disability experiences over time, and the determinants and consequences of different trajectories.

The RADAR Project: Identifying Early Warning Signals On The Pathways To Alcohol Use Disorder

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $884,321.00
    Summary
The transition from alcohol initiation to an alcohol use disorder is a crucial yet under-studied research area. The current project will characterise the natural history of alcohol use disorder and identify modifiable factors that increase or decrease the likelihood of developing an alcohol use disorder once alcohol use begins. This information will guide prevention of, and early intervention for, this disabling disorder.

Mediterranean Diet And Mortality: Analysis Of Longitudinal Dietary Patterns Using Newly Developed Statistical Methods

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $340,547.00
    Summary
Assessment of the effect of changes in diet of health has not undergone rigourous analytical assessment in the scientific literature. This proposal focusses on patterns of change over time in a Mediterranean diet in 41,000 persons in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. It will assess the benefits of adoption and maintenance of this diet over an extended period, as well as determining how the benefits of the diet depend on a person's age at its adoption, and how the benefits of the diet int ....
