Summary
Rheumatic heart disease is chronic damage to the heart valves caused by repeated bouts of acute rheumatic fever. Both are preventable, yet rates among Indigenous Australians are of the highest recorded. We propose to undertake the first multi-jurisdictional study of these conditions to determine trends in occurrence and evaluate the impact of existing interventions in Australia. Findings will be used to inform the development of a roadmap to remove RHD as a public health problem in Australia.

Chlamydia is the most commonly notified infection in young Australian women and reports of cases are increasing. While chlamydia is thought to result in infertility and ectopic pregnancy in later life, the evidence for this is limited. This will be the largest, most comprehensive study in the world to determine the risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy following chlamydia infection. Children’s healthy development is important for their readiness to learn, academic achievement at school, and for their future health and economic capability. This study links whole-of-population administrative data from nine different government sources, and data collected as part of a natural experiment evaluating the effects of the South Australian Family Home Visiting program to inform policy and service delivery in child health and development in South Australia.
Domestic Subversions: maternalism and cross-cultural histories. This project will assist in the processes of reconciliation, by fostering a sense of a shared history, and increasing public awareness of the complexity of race relations histories in Australia. It will redress a significant gap in Australian knowledge and literature. This project advances knowledge and conceptual understanding in the key areas of colonial race relations, Indigenous self-representation, and Indigenous literacy. A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. This project will add significantly to scholarly knowledge of James Hogg, now recognised as one of the most important nineteenth century Scottish writers, and of his better known contemporary Walter Scott. The exciting and very recent discovery of the original manuscript of Hogg's most ambitious novel, The Three Perils of Man, the inclusion of Scott's final, unpublished novella and the addition of a volume of Hogg's periodical writings have meant a major expansion of work already underway.
