Enhancing Joint Replacement Outcomes Through National Data Linkage

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $776,063.00
    Summary
This is an Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) project that involves linking Registry data with state and federal government health datasets. This will help to better understand the complications and factors affecting the rate of complication after hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement. This information will be used to improve outcomes for patients having this surgery.

IMPROVE - Investigating Medication Re-Purposing To Reduce Risk Of OVarian Cancer And Extend Survival

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $430,196.00
    Summary
Ovarian cancer is the 6th most common cause of cancer death in women and the proportion of women who die from their disease has not improved substantially over time. This large-scale study will use de-identified data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, the Australian Cancer Database and the National Death Index to investigate whether medications commonly used for other conditions can help decrease the risk of ovarian cancer developing or improve survival from ovarian cancer after diagnosis.

Health And Social Consequences Of Child Abuse And Neglect: An Analysis Using South Australian Linked Data

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $684,447.00
    Summary
Child maltreatment can result in a range of poor health, social and economic outcomes. Current surveys tell us little about the size of these impacts for young people especially for those with the worst outcomes—death, homelessness, hospitalisation, incarceration. This study will use data from hospitals, child protection and other services to explore the impacts of maltreatment on young people in SA and related costs to government, to inform policy to improve outcomes for this vulnerable group.

Defining Early Epigenetic Causes Of Cardiac Hypertrophy And Failure

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $620,917.00
    Summary
A big heart is bad news, no matter what the cause. Sometimes this happens when the heart is under stress. At other times no cause can be found. These studies will identify the molecular switches and signals that can transform a normal heart into a big heart. Some of these are inherited, some activated by stress. Armed with knowledge of the molecular mechanisms we can identify those at risk and design new targets for novel treatment strategies.

Heritable And Environmental Determinants Of Hospitalisation For Common Childhood Illnesses

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $468,238.00
    Summary
This study will combine the unique and powerful resources of the Western Australian (WA) Data Linkage System and the WA Twin Register to disentangle the effects of genetics and the environment on the most common infectious causes of hospital admissions in children. It will highlight appropriate pathways to prevent such admissions in the future.

Burden Of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) And Impact Of Prevention Strategies: Comprehensive Evidence To Drive The RHD Endgame

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $960,655.00
    Summary
Rheumatic heart disease is chronic damage to the heart valves caused by repeated bouts of acute rheumatic fever. Both are preventable, yet rates among Indigenous Australians are of the highest recorded. We propose to undertake the first multi-jurisdictional study of these conditions to determine trends in occurrence and evaluate the impact of existing interventions in Australia. Findings will be used to inform the development of a roadmap to remove RHD as a public health problem in Australia.

Deaths In Young People Involved In The Youth Justice System: Towards Evidence-based Prevention

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $620,705.00
    Summary
Young offenders have complex health needs and are at dramatically increased risk of preventable death due to drug overdose, suicide and injury. In order to inform effective prevention, a more detailed understanding of mortality in these young people is required. This project will examine all deaths in young offenders in Queensland from 1993 to 2015, identify targets for prevention, and recommend policy reforms and interventions that are supported by evidence and are culturally appropriate.

Evidence-based Recommendations For Interpregnancy Intervals In High-income Countries

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $423,305.00
    Summary
This study will identify the optimal and harmful interpregnancy intervals for a range of maternal and child outcomes in three high-income countries. With a study population of more than 7.5 million births and a longitudinal study design that matches pregnancies to the same women, this study will inform new interpregnancy interval recommendations for high-income countries that will lead to a reduction in avoidable excess morbidities attributable to uninformed pregnancy planning.

Pathways To Avoidable And Unexplained Deaths In The Early Lifecourse

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,108,086.00
    Summary
There continues to be unacceptable numbers of avoidable deaths in early life in Australia, particularity among disadvantaged groups. This project will use novel, large-scale population data to identify and quantify the impact of risks to early life mortality and preventable pathways. This new knowledge will inform new strategies to prevent stillbirth and child deaths for the benefit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other populations.

Understanding The Connections Between Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Culture, Health And Wellbeing To Support Action To Improve Outcomes

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,915,802.00
    Summary
Little is known about the inter-relationship of cultural factors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes and these relationships have not been quantified. Through a large cohort study, this research will produce data that combines standard health measures with newly developed quantitative measures of cultural factors, supported by data linkage infrastructure. Robust analytical methods will be used to inform policy and program development.
