Summary
Large-scale antimalarial drug screening projects have identified three different classes of compound that kill the malaria parasite at extremely low doses and which hold real promise as next-generation antimalarials. Genetic evidence, as well as preliminary data from our own lab, has led us to the hypothesis that all three compound classes exert their antimalarial effect by blocking a molecular ion pump on the parasite surface. The aim of this study is to test this.
Assessing the determinants and consequences of safety climate in the maritime industry. This project will examine the predictors and outcomes of safety climate in the Australian maritime industry. Findings from this project will be used to improve safety policies, regulations and practices that aim to minimise the number of accidents and incidents in Australian waters.
A systemic model to underpin enhanced management of powered-two-wheelers as part of a safe, sustainable transport system. Better management of motor scooters and motorbikes (Powered-2-wheelers or P2W) will deliver economic, environmental and social benefits. Road crashes involving P2Ws cost the Australian community in excess of $2 billion per annum. Fluid-structural interactions in high-speed flows. This project aims to perform experiments to measure fluid-structure interaction in hypersonic flows. The work will improve the accuracy of simulation tools that are urgently required to aid industry in the design of more structurally efficient and robust high-speed vehicles. These tools will in turn be used to reveal the underlying physics of the fluid-structure interactions and establish the relative significance of the driving parameters. Summary
Treating women with advanced breast cancer is difficult, and new drugs are needed to kill the cancer stem cells that cause recurrence. We think that a newly discovered protein, PKC-?, plays an important role in recurring breast cancer and can be targeted using novel ‘epigenetic’ drugs. Here, we will use cutting-edge DNA techniques to learn how this protein controls how cancer cells grow and produce the necessary data to show that targeting this protein is likely to be effective in real patients.
