A rigorous scholarly examination, however, has been yet to come. Ascending the Cross: Soviet Dissidents and the Universalisation of Human Rights. This project will study the contribution of persecuted dissidents to a diplomatic revolution. It will investigate how apparently powerless Soviet intellectuals like Sakharov and Solzhenitsyn used their moral authority to transform detente and challenge the notion that human rights was an internal affair of sovereign states. This project aims to analyse Australian motives and their connectedness to the allocation of foreign aid since the Second World War. In addition to reducing poverty and lifting living standards abroad, aid has always been linked to other interests such as the promotion of security, economic opportunity and other outcomes. This project proposes to view the South China Sea/Gulf of Thailand rim as a single economic region, a "water frontier" that endured for two centuries. Focusing on the Mekong delta and adjacent coasts, it will examine the major roles the Chinese played in the establishment of the Siamese and Vietnamese states.
