Duties beyond borders: A historical approach to protecting the vulnerable. Summary
Understanding Asia's fragile giants: empire, sovereignty and Chinese and Indian security perceptions and strategies in the Asian century. Northeast Asia and South Asia are two crucially important regions for Australia. Investigating how international orders evolved in both regions from 1650 to the present, this project will reveal the deep historical drivers of current Chinese and Indian security perceptions and strategies, helping us to better navigate the challenges of the Asian century.
Company states and international relations theory. This project aims to investigate the role of chartered companies in European colonialism. Chartered companies, profit-driven forerunners to today’s multinational corporations, wielded extensive sovereign powers (e.g. rights to wage war, conduct diplomacy, and raise taxes) normally reserved for governments. Women, Peace and Security: Rethinking Policy, Advocacy and Implementation. The United Nations Security Council addresses gender-related peace and security issues through the framework of the ‘women, peace and security’ (WPS) agenda. This project aims to show how the WPS agenda is translated from international through national to local contexts, by applying discourse-theoretical analysis to the formation of the WPS policy architecture, mapping feminist advocacy around the WPS agenda, and analysin ....Women, Peace and Security: Rethinking Policy, Advocacy and Implementation. The impact of political reconciliation in the Asia-Pacific. Does transitional justice make a difference? Implications for the Asia-Pacific region. Despite the proliferation of human rights prosecutions and truth commissions, scholars know very little about whether such measures are actually effective in discouraging future human rights violations. This project answers this question by assessing the impact of human rights prosecutions and truth commissions on human rights practices.
Amnesties and peace accords in the Asia-Pacific. This project aims to produce a comprehensive empirical study of peace-settlement amnesties and their impact on democracy, human rights and long-term peace in the aftermath of violent con?ict. It combines a large-scale global study of all amnesties included in peace accords from 1980 to 2005 with four case studies drawn from the Asia-Paci?c region: Indonesia/Aceh; Papua New Guinea/Bougainville; East Timor; and the Solomon Islands. This project will analyse and explain the development of an international responsibility to hold corrupt heads of state accountable by targeting their illicit wealth.
