The World Wide Web contains tens of billions of images, with personal and industrial collections stretching to may times that number. The potential economic value of these image-based resources is enormous, but largely untapped as we have no practical way of recovering the images we need. This project will develop image search technologies which will allow Australian industry to exploit these important resources. Some of the wide variety of possible applications might include the searching of surveillance video for objects of interest, vision-based guidance of unmanned vehicles, smart-phone and smart-home systems which understand their environments, and stock tracking systems which can detect spoilage.Read moreRead less

Advancing uncertainty prioritisation in water resource management. This project aims to develop a holistic framework for prioritisation of uncertainties in Integrated Water Resource Assessment and Management to assist water resource analysts and planners to improve sustainability of water resource management outcomes. This project aims to develop a holistic framework for prioritisation of uncertainties in Integrated Water Resource Assessment and Management to assist water resource analysts and planners to improve sustainability of water resource management outcomes. The framework will help scientists, consultants, policy makers and water users better select which sources of uncertainty to address in their work, with what resources, and what methods. Expected outcomes are novel analytical methods to evaluate current practice in uncertainty prioritisation, communicate when and how to use established and novel uncertainty management techniques, and improve prioritisation of uncertainty using proof-of-concept model-based analyses. The project should improve decision making in policy and industry, and societal and environmental outcomes of water management.Read moreRead less
Mapping ear morphology to individualised three dimensional audio. The project aims to develop a practical method to derive a listener's individualised Head Related Transfer Functions from two dimensional images of the head and ears. These are essential for generating high-fidelity three dimensional audio. The project will perceptually evaluate and test the proposed system when applied to teleconferencing, surveillance, and navigational guidance.
Modelling and simulation of self-organised behaviour in biological and bio-inspired systems. Understanding self-organised systems is fundamental in biology and bio-inspired engineering. The project develops sophisticated mathematical modelling techniques and high performance simulation methods for such systems. This will increase our capacity to explain complex biological behaviour and to produce reliable bio-inspired engineering solutions
Individualisation for 3D Audio. The project aim is to allow the general listener to enjoy high-fidelity 3-D sound over headphones. Such 3-D audio is of paramount importance when inter-personal communication requires situational awareness, (eg search and rescue, fire-fighting, and air traffic control). To achieve this, the project aims to address one of the toughest problems in audio signal processing: deriving high-fidelity 3-D audio headphone filters from photos and/or 3D scans of ears. To achieve this, the project aims to address one of the toughest problems in audio signal processing: deriving high-fidelity 3-D audio headphone filters from photos and/or 3D scans of ears. The project plans to address fundamental research questions in statistical shape and data analysis and to perceptually evaluate the 3-D audio methods developed.Read moreRead less
Subject-specific computational models for accurate evaluation of muscle function in human locomotion. The purpose of this project is to advance current understanding of muscle function during human locomotion. The most significant outcome will be the development of novel computational tools that can play a pivotal role in the healthcare industry through the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders.
Evaluating recurrence as a measure of change in interpersonal dynamics. This project aims to develop an automated conversation analysis system to quantify how communication changes over extended periods of time. It is innovative in proposing to extend the theory and methods of recurrence analysis (a dynamical systems technique) to interacting modalities combining text, audio and video, and to longitudinal analyses. This project aims to develop an automated conversation analysis system to quantify how communication changes over extended periods of time. It is innovative in proposing to extend the theory and methods of recurrence analysis (a dynamical systems technique) to interacting modalities combining text, audio and video, and to longitudinal analyses. The project is significant in being the first to aim to measure communication dynamics over time in the fields of education, health, public discourse and science. It is expected to result in new theories and methods for recurrence analysis validated using real-world data; and to enable new technologies for evaluating professional communication training and communication changes resulting from education or disease progression.Read moreRead less

This project aims to understand the extent to which a given complex social network can be controlled and how different control mechanisms influence network structure and dynamics. There is a great interest in controlling complex networks including social networks as it might contribute to solving important societal challenges. Using gender imbalance, minority marginalisation, and criminal behaviour as case studies, this project will investigate the direction of networks controllability and mechanisms that would enable alteration of the network in a desired way. This project will have an impact on our current understanding of network's behaviour, and will contribute to solving a range of societal challenges.Read moreRead less
Managing infectious disease through partial wildlife social networks. This project aims to investigate the dynamics of the spread of infectious disease in wildlife, derived from incomplete information about contact networks. This project aims to investigate the dynamics of the spread of infectious disease in wildlife, derived from incomplete information about contact networks. Infectious diseases in wildlife are difficult to track and control, because it is not feasible to monitor each individual in a population and know the contact network for a population. The project will create ways to best utilise incomplete observational data of contact networks to develop robust predictions of disease spread and population fate, and to reliably predict the outcomes of management interventions. These robust prediction methods will provide better insights for conservation of Australian wildlife.Read moreRead less
Coupling Learning in Big Data. Big data features complex coupling relationships within and between diverse entities in various forms and layers. This fundamentally challenges existing learning theories, which usually assume that data is independent and identically distributed (IID). This indicates that such IID tools may either be inapplicable for big data or capture an incomplete or even biased picture of the ground truth in big data. Hence, this project aims to invent breakthrough theories and ....Coupling Learning in Big Data. This fundamentally challenges existing learning theories, which usually assume that data is independent and identically distributed (IID). This indicates that such IID tools may either be inapplicable for big data or capture an incomplete or even biased picture of the ground truth in big data. Hence, this project aims to invent breakthrough theories and effective tools for systematically modelling and learning sophisticated couplings embedded in big data applications. The outcomes are expected to enhance Australia's leading role in data science research and lift data intelligence-driven productivity and economic growth in a changing world.Read moreRead less
