Summary
People with an intellectual disability (ID) may be more prone to dementia, especially at younger ages. Dr. Evans is a psychologist whose research background is in mental health in ID. This fellowship will allow her to expand her existing study of dementia in people with ID, to examine the usefulness of selected screening tools and assessments for dementia in this group, and to identify improvements in the way that people with ID who develop dementia receive help within health system.

An inter-university collaborative research centre – the Australian Centre for Economic Research on Health (ACERH) – will be established, undertaking applied health economics research within three research programs: health insurance; ageing; and the economic analysis of illness and injury. ACERH will develop a unique, unit record, linked data set, including data from private health insurance partners, providing longitudinal data on health service utilisation in both public and private sectors.
Prophylactic Antibiotics To Prevent Recurrent Lower Respiratory Tract Infections In Children With Neurological Impairment (PARROT) Study

Summary
We plan a randomised controlled trial to determine if 12 months of a type of antibiotics (compared to placebo) reduces hospitalisations in children with neurological impairment. Currently this group of children are recurrently hospitalised and some doctors use long term antibiotics but there is no high level evidence for this practice. The study will be undertaken in the UK and Australia and involve 474 children. The study will lead to better clinical care and inform guidelines.
