Novel silicon photonic devices harnessing new leakage behaviour. The continuing advance of microprocessor performance requires vast quantities of data to be transferred between on-chip processor cores and to the outside world. The transfer of data via metal wires cannot meet this demand due to limited bandwidth and astonishing heat generation. Low-loss photonic transport integrated onto the silicon chip offers a solution. With this project we will explore harnessing a newly discovered phenomenon ....Novel silicon photonic devices harnessing new leakage behaviour. With this project we will explore harnessing a newly discovered phenomenon in silicon photonics to achieve devices such as electrically pumped lasers and wavelength routers. The project will collaborate closely with researchers in the USA, but will focus on research of designs that can be created in Australia and licensed to major industry across the globe.

Mathematical Foundations of Distributed Radar. Conventional military threats to Australia are large or fast moving objects such as ships and aircraft and conventional radar systems are designed to handle such threats. Recent global political shifts have changed the threats to include objects that are small and slowly moving, such as people, small vehicles and boats. Advances in radar hardware make feasible small, low-powered, devices with inherently reduced performance in comparison to deployed ....Mathematical Foundations of Distributed Radar. Conventional military threats to Australia are large or fast moving objects such as ships and aircraft and conventional radar systems are designed to handle such threats. Recent global political shifts have changed the threats to include objects that are small and slowly moving, such as people, small vehicles and boats. Advances in radar hardware make feasible small, low-powered, devices with inherently reduced performance in comparison to deployed systems. Methods for information integration over a dispersed system of such small devices, design of suitable waveform suites and clever local signal processing algorithms will be developed to achieve the performance improvements the hardware offers, to handle the new threats.Read moreRead less
Data integration, scale and classification of remotely sensed imagery. This project will investigate and resolve the specific problems associated with processing, interpreting and classifying high-resolution satellite imagery. This project will investigate and resolve the specific problems associated with processing, interpreting and classifying high-resolution satellite imagery. Previous work has shown that current algorithms developed for lower resolution remote sensing data are not appropriate for processing higher resolution data. New algorithms will be developed for geometrically and radiometrically processing high-resolution satellite data so that it can be interpreted in conjunction with other similar data, or existing lower resolution data. Consequently, the potential uses of high resolution satellite imagery will be greatly increased, allowing many more users to access the advantages of this unique source of data.Read moreRead less
