Surface Integrity Characterization of Sapphire Wafers for Wireless and Fibre Optic Semiconductor Industry. This project aims to uncover the mechanism of surface integrity in sapphire wafers and thus to establish its relationship with the quality processing of integrated circuits. The project will comprehensively consider surface damage, residual stresses, thermal shock and dislocation evolution as an organic whole to provide an effective solution to the problems in the current production practice. Problems caused by unsatisfactory surface integrity represent a major outlay for the wireless and fibre optic semiconductor industry. The proposed research holds the very real possibility of reducing the capital cost and enhancing the quality of the integrated circuits of high capacity.

Integrated silicon carbide nanosensors for monitoring extreme environment. This project aims to develop a highly sensitive and reliable sensing platform for structural health monitoring in harsh environments, encompassing high temperature, corrosion, and shock. These conditions have been posing several technical challenges to sensing and electronic devices. The project elucidates the piezoresistive and thermoresistive effects in silicon carbide nanowires, which are the building blocks of robust mechanical and thermal sensors used in extreme conditions. The findings from this project expect to provide Australia with the cutting-edge expertise necessary for developing next-generation monitoring systems in the extreme environments of the oil/gas transportation, mining, automobile, and space exploration industries.

Most modern machineries and industrial processes are manipulated using advanced control technologies. With the recent advances in information technology, more and more control systems operate over communications networks. However, the technologies used in these control systems are seriously lagging behind because they make little assumptions about problems in digital communications. These problems include sampling errors, quantization errors, transmission errors and transmission delays. The proposed research will develop a new control theory to address this issue. Our work will help Australia maintain a leading role in the area of control and give the Australian industry advantages in applying modern technologies in control and automation.
