Currently the primary method for breast screening is X-ray mammography and in rare cases Magnetic Resonance Imaging. X-ray mammography has saved many lives, but the technology still produces a relativity high number of false negative and false positive diagnoses. In the last decade, active microwave techniques have attracted considerable interest as viable alternatives to X-ray mammography. This project aims at the design and development of a low-cost microwave system, which will complement X-ray mammography as a breast cancer diagnosis tool. Read moreRead less

We propose fabrication of special-type gels and for the first time use the 4.7 Tesla mini-scanner for dose mapping. Increased magnetic field combined with a small aperture for field dissipation will greatly improve spatial resolution down to micrometers (micro-dosimetry). This new technique will render gel-dosimeters suitable for applications in radiotherapy, industrial and all other radiation fields. Moreover, we will employ new parameter for dose mapping, which is expected to be more sensitive to radiation than the currently used relaxation timesRead moreRead less

Disposable microdevices for fast ion analysis. The design and fabrication of a microdevice for ion chromatography will introduce Australia to the field of miniaturised total analytical systems (µTAS). The availability of infrastructure, technology and experience in the µTAS area will provide the foundation for specialised commercialisation of sophisticated, chip-based analytical instruments. These instruments have important applications in forensic, clinical and environmental chemistry.
