Recent advances have highlighted the potential significance of the Olary Domain in the Curnamona Province in southern Australia as an important Proterozoic copper-gold district. However, an outstanding problem yet to be solved is the interplay between mineralisation, granitic magmatism and the metamorphic history of the Province. This multi-disciplinary project will use isotopic and geochemical tools to develop an integrated geologic framework within which to view mineralisation. The outcomes will enhance the prospectivity of the region and make an important contribution to the globally relevant question of controls on Proterozoic copper-gold systems.Read moreRead less

Human occupation of Australia and the Pacific dates back tens of thousands of years. New micro-analytical techniques now make it possible to learn about the life histories of these ancient peoples: their diet, migration paths and the climate in which they lived. This project will benefit the Indigenous populations and researchers of neighbouring countries through collaboration and increased knowledge of their ancestors, thus enhancing Australia's links and status as a good neighbour in the region. This falls squarely into the Research Priority 'Safeguarding Australia - Understanding our Region and the World'. In the future, our analytical approach will give important insights into the complex and rich archaeological heritage of Australia. Read moreRead less

New magnetic materials of the molecular or biological types are quite different to traditional metal oxide magnets widely used, for example, in recording devices. They are very important from the perspective of understanding fundamental properties at low temperatures, in high magnetic fields, or when irradiated by light, but they are also showing promise in a range of applications, such as memory devices and smart cards and in the new area of spintronics and molecular computers. The magnetochemical projects described here, that require the new equipment being sought, are fundamental in nature but will provide the underpinning of future nanomagnetic materials.Read moreRead less

Effective mineral exploration strategies in complex basement terrains are increasingly reliant on integrated, data-rich, tectonic models. In this project we will focus a large multidisciplinary team to develop a tectonic model for the evolution of the Musgrave Block in central Australia. This large, poorly understood terrain occupies a critical structural location, separating the northern and southern Australian cratons. By constraining models of crustal evolution and architecture, the project will underpin future mineral exploration programs in this highly prospective greenfields region and define the role of the Musgrave Block in the assembly of Proterozoic Australia.Read moreRead less
Developing a Tectonic Framework for the Gawler Craton: Paving the Way for Successful Mineral Exploration Programs. The late Archaean to Mesoproterozoic Gawler Craton is the major Precambrian province in southern Australia. However, despite containing one of the largest orebodies on Earth, exploration expenditure in the craton has been comparatively low, and hampered by insufficient knowledge of the craton's tectonic systems. This project uses an integrated package of geochemical, isotopic and geophysical tools to develop a comprehensive model for the tectonic evolution of the Gawler Craton. The project will constrain the development of the Gawler Craton in the context of Precambrian Australian evolution, and offer insights into universal processes of lithosphere formation, growth and stabilisation.Read moreRead less

High efficiency, low temperature, cheap hydrogen activation catalysts suitable for fuel cell applications would provide the basis for the development of environmentally benign technologies suitable for transportation and some power applications. Hydrogenase enzymes are high efficiency, low temperature, hydrogen activation catalysts and the active site of the all-iron version of the enzyme has recently been revealed to be a remarkable, weakly protein bound, iron-sulfur-carbonyl-cyanide complex. Research into the reactions of redox activated abiological model compounds will provide insights into the molecular basis of the enzymatic reaction, potentially leading to the discovery of highly efficient, biologically inspired hydrogen activation catalysts.Read moreRead less

Currently 80% of that comes from nickel sulphide deposits in regional Australia that are expected to be exhausted within thirty years barring significant new discoveries. Although discovery rates have been declining, as the 'easy' targets have been found, there remains considerable potential for future major discoveries. This project addresses the pressing need for new data and improved exploration techniques to enable industry to target new discoveries. As our nickel mines are located in remote communities such discoveries also have major benefits for regional Australia.Read moreRead less

Nickel contributes approximately $2 billion per year to Australia's export income. Currently 80% of that is coming from sulfide deposits, which are expected to be exhausted within thirty years barring significant new discoveries. Discovery rates have been declining for two decades, as the 'easy' targets have been found, despite a broad increase in nickel exploration expenditure to current levels of around $50 million per year. There is a pressing need for new data sets and techniques to allow industry to target new discoveries based on limited drill sampling of potential host rocks. This project forms part of a broader program to harness the igneous geochemistry of the platinum group elements as a powerful pathfinder in nickel exploration.Read moreRead less

The information from Human Genome Project is being used to generate molecules with a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The capability to design, synthesise and manipulate functional molecules that mimic biological processes will underpin many emerging applications. In this project, macrocyclic metal complexes that catalyse the cleavage of phosphate ester bonds in biological molecules will be developed. Active complexes will be incorporated into nanosized peptide nucleic acid (PNA) - metal complex hybrids and applied as artificial enzymes in the sequence specific cleavage of RNA and DNA. Novel applications of these ?artificial enzymes? in biotechnology are anticipated.Read moreRead less
