Nanoscale Molecular Architectures - New Metallo Cages and Capsules. The design and synthesis of novel cage and capsule-like supermolecular structures will be undertaken, including rare examples of two large cage types - one designed to incorporate two adjacent metal ions in an extended (chiral) cavity while the other utilises macrocyclic metal complexes as the 'walls' of the cage. In the latter case metal variation makes possible the alteration of the electronic environment of a guest occupying the central cavity . A third (capsule-like) system is designed to 'open' and 'close' under pH control. The present studies hold promise for underpinning the future development of nano-scale molecular devices.

The agricultural industry is in urgent need of new, safe and cost effective treatments for parasite infections in commercial livestock (sheep, cattle, goats). The current multi billion dollar agrochemical industry provides only three classes of antiparasitic drug, all of which are >25 yrs old and are largely ineffective due to the widespread resistance. This project will advance the development of a new class of antiparasitic treatment, improving outcomes for Australian farmers by reducing reliance on expensive ineffective agrochemical imports, reducing chemical load on the environment, improving pastures and increasing yields. In short, improved livestock health will lead to more sustainable and productive farming, and a stronger economy.Read moreRead less

Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific is a major supplier of explosive services to the coal, iron ore and gold-mining industries. Many mines in Australia and overseas are in hot and reactive ground, where eliminating the risk of spontaneous detonation is a considerable addition to operating costs. The Company and the University will collaborate to significantly improve our capacity to evaluate ground for reactivity and to formulate new inhibited emulsion explosives for use in hot and reactive ground. This will lead to much more flexible, cost-effective mining operations, by understanding the key parameters for the safe ‘sleep time’ of on-site explosives. This should result in greater export competitiveness and rural employment opportunities. Read moreRead less
Copper and gallium radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and therapy of cancer. The goal of this project is to develop the chemistry required to prepare molecular imaging and therapeutic agents for the diagnosis and treatment of certain types of cancer.
Self-Assembly of Nanoscale Molecular Capsules. Nature uses the self-assembly of molecules for the construction of highly complex and functional structures. An understanding of this process will enable the design of new molecular systems, capable of application in areas that include medicine, electronics and communications. Such self-assembly will play a key role in the development of nanotechnology, a rapidly expanding field that is likely to become a major technology in the foreseeable future. ....Self-Assembly of Nanoscale Molecular Capsules. The increasing demand from both academic and industrial sectors has created an urgent need for enhancement and extension of the "Integrated Victorian X-Ray Structural Determination and Materials Characterisation Facility". This proposal achieves this aim by extending the collaborating institutes to include Monash University and adding modern single-crystal, two-dimensional microdiffraction, and wavelength dispersive xrf systems. The result will provide significantly enhanced characterisation and analysis facilities and enable new areas of research to be developed in organic and inorganic synthesis, material chemistry, polymer chemistry, and food, environmental and forensic sciences.Read moreRead less
