Behavioural strategies for selecting innovation projects. When financing new innovations, everyone wants to back a potential winner. However, not spotting a winning project and letting opportunity to innovate pass, has significant negative consequences. This project will analyse how design thinking by senior executives and investors can boost innovation by not rejecting a good project.
Innovation and dynamic networks in project-based firms. Innovation is central to Australia's future prosperity but many commentators have bemoaned national performance in 'obvious' indicators of innovation such as R&D spending and patents. We argue that a lot of innovation in Australia is actually hidden in the business of projects. To compete in the international economy it is vital to know how to manage innovation in this context. The proposed research will use new methods in network analysis ....Innovation and dynamic networks in project-based firms. The logic of market-creating innovations. The project seeks to provide theoretical insight and empirical evidence on the behavioural determinants of companies and executives that lead to market-creating growth. The project seeks to provide theoretical insight and empirical evidence on the behavioural determinants of companies and executives that lead to market-creating growth. The question of how to support economic growth through innovation has drawn much attention and debate because Australian companies underperform in delivering value creation from new innovations. This project plans to test a model of growth based upon companies' changes to routines and resource configurations as they create actions to prove a new hypothesis, rather than to confirm what markets already know. The model will involve policies that executives may find beneficial in building up their companies’ capabilities in sensing and seizing options for growth before the market logics of those options have been proven elsewhere. Developing such capabilities could boost the rate of market-creating innovations arising from Australian research.Read moreRead less
Managing the risks of cross-sector R&D collaboration. One of the most interesting and dynamic forms of cross-sector R&D collaboration in Australia occurs through the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Program. This study investigates how collaboration and 'risk' is managed among CRCs and their partners. It is pioneering research bringing two aspects of cross-sector collaboration into a single, longitudinal study. The study will produce new knowledge concerning: management processes in cross-secto ....Managing the risks of cross-sector R&D collaboration. It is pioneering research bringing two aspects of cross-sector collaboration into a single, longitudinal study. The study will produce new knowledge concerning: management processes in cross-sector R&D, organisational change and the impact of sustained collaboration on partners, and the role of public policy on collaborative R&D in Australia.Read moreRead less
The social network antecedents and performance outcomes of service innovation. Service innovation is vital for organisations in creating and sustaining customer value in a knowledge-based economy. To enhance our understanding of service innovation, this project examines the role of social network factors and the conditions by which service innovation contributes to firm performance.
Boards of directors and the governance of emergence risk. Australian firms systematically under-invest in innovation and other future-oriented activities. An underlying premise of this research is that, in part, this is because they do not systematically include emergence risk in their governance activities. If we find that this is the case, one impact of this research will be to contribute to a rethinking of the roles and practices of boards of directors. If we find that this is the case, one impact of this research will be to contribute to a rethinking of the roles and practices of boards of directors. A consequence of this will be that Australian corporations will become more competent in the management of innovation and other future-oriented activities. Read moreRead less
Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE). New business creation is a major source of new jobs and an important component of our nation's innovation system. The project will permanently transform the understanding of business creation in Australia. In contribution to NRP 3, high-technology new ventures will be over-sampled and given particular attention. New business creation is a major source of new jobs and an important component of our nation's innovation system. The project will permanently transform the understanding of business creation in Australia. In contribution to NRP 3, high-technology new ventures will be over-sampled and given particular attention. The research is part of a strategy to create a world class research centre in entrepreneurship (as CI 1 previously had a key role in doing in Sweden). Frontier knowledge in this area contributes to 'promoting an innovation culture and economy' and facilitates 'maximizing Australia's benefits from investments in research, particularly related to commercialisation of 'Breakthrough science' and 'Frontier technologies'.Read moreRead less
What facilitates or hinders the discovery and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities? A systematic comparison of the independent and corporate contexts. Every opportunity that is discovered but not exploited represents significant unrealised value for the entrepreneur and society-at-large. By providing clear implications for managers and entrepreneurs as to which factors will facilitate and constrain the successful exploitation of discovered opportunities, this research will contribute to ....What facilitates or hinders the discovery and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities? A systematic comparison of the independent and corporate contexts. Every opportunity that is discovered but not exploited represents significant unrealised value for the entrepreneur and society-at-large. By providing clear implications for managers and entrepreneurs as to which factors will facilitate and constrain the successful exploitation of discovered opportunities, this research will contribute to increasing the discovery of technologies as well as their successful commercialisation. It will promote a more vibrant, innovative culture at companies and within Australian society. In particular our focus of the mining sector will benefit the Australian economy, as this sector is of major economic importance.Read moreRead less

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is one of the most pervasive sources of technological change in contemporary Australian enterprises. ERP systems are computer-based technologies that are designed to increase efficiency and achieve major cost savings across the entire organization. Their implementation has significant implications for the structure, nature and management of organizations. This project's innovative application of an organizational change model to eight detailed case studies across a range of organizational types will generate important new insights into the effects of ERP implementations at Australian organizations and help explain why some implementations are more successful than others.Read moreRead less
