How Australian industries are pooling innovation resources and why this matters. Common pooling of resources for innovation is an emerging phenomenon in several Australian industries. This project will seek to explain why this is occurring, using insights from economic theory, and how pooling is harnessed for wider public good.
Engineering synthetic genetic codes. Large, high quality libraries of new drugs are absolutely essential resources to find new medicines. However, their use is restricted to a few pharmaceutical giants. We will engineer cells to make a wide variety of drug-like polymers, providing a drug discovery resource accessible to almost any scientific laboratory. As each cell could make a different polymer, billions of different potential drugs could be produced in a single tube. This technology provides ....Engineering synthetic genetic codes. In an information-based economy, the critical issue for many organisations is how to leverage their information systems effectively. Remarkably, there is almost no detailed research on this topic. This project will address this problem by building a new paradigm for research on the effective use of information systems in organisations. It will involve developing and testing two complementary theories of effective use and designing and testing a novel intervention to facilitate more effective use in an organisation. To maximise academic and practical value, it involves a rigorous program of empirical work in the information-intensive industries of Healthcare and Information Systems Auditing in Australia and Canada. New information technologies allow utility infrastructures to operate as smart grids, with the promise of multiple economic and environmental benefits. Utility infrastructures are largely unaltered since first installed 100 years ago, and smart grids have the potential to catalyse significant innovation. This project aims to investigate the societal drivers for, and implications of, smart grids and assess how these grid implementations vary from place to place. It will assess the implications of this for theory and practices of innovation and learning. This project also aims to provide new insights into the messy, complex societal reaction to smart grids in Australia; a country at the forefront of smart grid implementation.Read moreRead less
