Summary
Injuries such as concussion and muscle/joint sprains/strains are a recognised sports medicine issue globally. They are a major barrier towards sustained physical activity participation and a public health concern. Much information about their causes and prevention is yet to be fully disseminated to the community and adopted as standard safety practice. This fellowship will provide a strong evidence-base for sports injury prevention and monitoring, as well as sports safety promotion strategies.

This Career Development Fellowship will use the analysis of existing (and continuing data collection), and key health data linkages to improve understanding of the outcomes of injury survivors and factors contributing to outcomes. The outcomes of this research program will be improved injury burden estimates, and better health outcomes for trauma survivors through informing evidence-based clinical guidelines and trauma care delivery.

Evaluating interventions to prevent serious road traffic crashes. This project aims to advance knowledge on the prevention of road traffic crashes that result in serious injury or death. Road traffic injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalised injury and injury-related deaths in Australia, and are estimated to cost the economy $27 billion annually. Effectiveness and appropriateness of child restraints. This project aims to provide a definitive picture of the use, misuse and inappropriate use of child restraints in motor vehicles. It will evaluate the biomechanical and size deficiencies of current child restraints for the current population of children, and the implications for increased injury associated with these factors. This will provide a solid evidence base for improved child restraint design, education, and legislative changes.

We aim to examine the effect of increased penalty regimes on speeding offenders and its relationship to their traffic and criminal histories.
