This project aims to construct an intelligent bibliometric system to track and predict technological change and recombination from bibliometric streaming data. This project expects to spearhead a new cross-disciplinary direction of research in both bibliometrics and innovation and technology management. Expected outcomes of this project include an intelligent bibliometric system, a technological change tracking method and a dynamic knowledge mapping and prediction method. The project seeks to create a systematic solution for understanding technological change in Australia’s emerging sectors that support governments in developing science policy, and assists researchers to explore frontier research prioritiesRead moreRead less

Quantum Mechanics is emerging out of physics and permeating into other areas, for example, information retrieval, human language and cognition. This offers tantalizing possibilities and bizarre implications, some of which, if realized, can lead to genuine breakthroughs in producing information technology to enhance human awareness in increasingly complex information environments. Through this project, Australia has the possibility to be at the forefront and have a hand in determining such developments.Read moreRead less
A scheme of local compilation of mobile collectors for image and video search engines. The object collector is an important component in a Web search engine. A collector collects Web objects (text, image, video, etc), extracts their features and builds an index file for the search engine. Sending each object to the collector is always the worst option with respect to resource usage because it is the feature, not the entire object, which will be used in indexing and retrieval. An alternative is to send a collector to the source site, which has an advantage of distributing computational load and performing summarization and compression. This project proposes a locally compiled mobile collector for image and video search engines.Read moreRead less
TRIIBE TRacking Indoor Information BEhaviour. This project will research the passive tracking of user's mobile devices in indoor spaces correlating their spatial behaviour with their information needs to deliver personalised information. The project will create a system that enables owners of large buildings (for example, shopping malls, airports, universities) to better manage their spaces and services.
User-Adaptive Search and Evaluation for Complex Information-Seeking Tasks. This project plans to develop a new evaluation framework to understand and characterise web users and their situation within complex, multi-faceted search tasks, exemplified through job-search. While evaluation of web search engine effectiveness is relatively well understood, measuring information retrieval performance in the context of complex tasks with heterogeneous users is a largely neglected problem. This project pl ....User-Adaptive Search and Evaluation for Complex Information-Seeking Tasks. This project plans to mine user-specific characteristics and situations from complex profiles and interaction logs for online information services run by the industry partner, SEEK. The new techniques are intended to redefine understanding of task-oriented search, and have the potential to reinvent the user experience for complex search tasks. This project will transform how practical search systems are measured within complex task scenarios. This will result in substantial economic impact by enabling businesses providing task-based search services to provide more customized offerings. Within the target domain (job search), this greatly enhances a service highly relevant to Australia's productivity.Read moreRead less
Methodologies for Designing and Evaluating Information Retrieval Experiments. Australian researchers have been highly successful in the area of information searching for more than two decades. Australian researchers have been highly successful in the area of information searching for more than two decades. This project will reinforce that position. By developing better measures of how retrieval systems such as web search engines perform, we will be able to advise the providers of such services on how to structure software so as to maximize the utility gained by their customers. Targeted access to the right information is a goal of all organizations, regardless of their type, and improved methodologies for conducting information retrieval experiments will have widespread and tangible benefits. The techniques developed will also be applicable in fields such as document categorization, text summarization, and machine learning.Read moreRead less
