This project extends a model of eResearch that has been demonstrated between the UK and Australia in a collaboration between the UK National eScience Centre and Curtin University that modelled consumer behaviour in telecommunications and financial services markets using Grid technologies. The INWA (Innovation Node – Western Australia) Grid was extended to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in January 2005 and now offers the potential for applying these techniques to emerging markets within China. Modelling and understanding these dynamics within the most rapidly developing economy in the world provides a number of valuable outputs but will also allow a Grid support for collaborative eResearch across three continents to be tested and developed.Read moreRead less

This project will improve numeracy standards in secondary schools, by assisting teachers to personalise the teaching of each student. Through detailed research, the project will develop sophisticated assessments that clearly reveal students' mathematical thinking. On-line diagnosis will suggest teaching activities that can bring about desired conceptual changes. The effectiveness of the resources will be thoroughly tested, for impact on student achievement and the mathematics teaching skills of teachers, especially those working out-of-field. Rural schools will have equal access to these resources. Good numeracy provides the foundation for life-long learning, employment satisfaction and the economic competitiveness of Australia.Read moreRead less

During airport security screening and processing, confusion and error are greatest when systems or contexts are unfamiliar. Poorly designed systems compromise the interactions of airport security personnel and decrease their ability to promptly and accurately respond to situations. This project aims to deliver a suite of automated methods to monitor security operator knowledge and engagement, to assess the real-time security screening context, and to detect unusual passenger behaviour at the screening check-point. This monitoring aims to provide new knowledge and techniques to enhance security operator performance, refine the screening process, improve passenger experience and, most critically, ensure safety at Australian airports.Read moreRead less

A 10 gigabit per second fibre optic link to the Mt Pleasant and Mt Canopus observatories will enable a wide range of new and exciting research opportunities. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) allows imaging of distant astronomical objects with much higher resolution than any other technique. The proposed fibre optic link will revolutionise Australia's VLBI capability, giving it the world's most sensitive array, with enhanced reliability and faster access to results for researchers. This project will greatly facilitate studies of astrophysical processes in Galactic and extra-galactic environments as well as precision measurements of the Earth's crustal dynamics.Read moreRead less

Customer relationship management (CRM) is a business and marketing strategy that integrates technology, process and business activities around the customer. Only 30% of electronic CRM efforts have been successfully implemented because stakeholder expectations are typically neglected. This issue underlines the importance of the ?soft? organisational issues involved with the evaluation of information systems. By evaluating the change management process and modelling the impact of e-CRM enabled change, management strategies will be developed to enable its successful implementation. The research will provide a greater understanding for evaluating the performance of e-CRM solutions, as well as uncover opportunities for organisational related change.Read moreRead less
