Intelligent Biomedical System Modelling and Multi-modality Image Analysis to Maximize Diagnostic Information from Medical Imaging. Medical imaging is an essential part of our Australian modern health care system and plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment planning and decision making and assessment of treatment of patients. This project aims to maximize the benefit of federal government healthcare investment through intelligent biomedical system modelling in conjunction with multi-modality image analysis to extract crucial additional information for accurate diagnosis and improved treatment, which will not only lead to a major scientific advancement, but also deliver significant social benefits.

The project will improve the capacity of Australian companies to bring products to market more quickly where there are complex trade-offs between interacting actors. The simulation guidelines will help understand interaction in complex systems and the identification of important factors in the air traffic domain. The research will also preserve the leading position of Australian technology for high quality simulations of air traffic control. The new methods will help Australian SMEs using agent technology, of which there are several.

Varying similarity metrics in indexing and retrieving high dimensional data. Many applications require varying distance metrics by putting a weight on different dimensions. Taking an example in visual information retrieval, due to the subjective nature of similarity measurements, the distance metrics can vary between different users. The main problem with k nearest neighbour (k-nn) searches using weighted metrics in a high dimensional space is whether the searches can be done efficiently, since in an arbitrary distance metric the intersection between the k-nn sphere and the bounding envelopes of nodes in an index tree cannot be easily calculated. This project aims to seek a novel solution. It will create a great impact on and have many applications in high dimensional visual information retrieval, instance-based learning, complex analysis, non-parametric density estimation, etc.

Harnessing Business Insights from Unstructured Customer Data. Resulting from customers’ widespread uptake of online channels to buy and communicate has been a surge in online reviews and social media posts. This textual information offers a viable alternative to surveys that Australian businesses currently conduct to obtain customer insights. However, these reviews are unstructured and require substantial pre-processing to extract underlying customer perceptions. Therefore, this project aims to develop a novel machine learning approach to quantify the business-relevant information contained in textual information shared by customers online. This alternative approach will provide significant cost-saving benefits for a range of Australian companies, such as retailers, hotels, airlines and restaurants.

Design of Service Interfaces for e-Business Applications. Economic pressures are rapidly driving businesses towards automation of e-business (electronic business) transactions. Successful e-business relies on accurate interchange of information among large numbers of autonomous partner organizations with different business semantics. Web services are widely regarded as having the potential to provide a suitable platform for the implementation of e-business applications, however so far only limited attention was paid to Web services design. The aim of this project is to develop a design method suitable for developing a comprehensive and consistent set of Web services for a given application domain and to verify this method using a prototype implementation.

Governance of Agile Software Development Projects. The aim of the project is to generate theoretical knowledge on how to govern agile teams effectively. Effective governance of software development projects is essential for companies to protect their information technology investments. Nowadays, companies have migrated to agile software development where requirements and solutions evolve iteratively and change frequently; yet formal approaches to governance (eg steering committee and detailed plans) are ineffective and impede flexibility, agility and creativity. This project aims to identify informal governance approaches for agile projects based on team embeddedness and network theory. With this knowledge, management could ensure projects deliver value at an acceptable cost, quality and timescale.

A novel Internet-based clinical trial service. The best way to test whether a clinical treatment intervention is effective is a randomised controlled trial (rct). Rcts are expensive, both in terms of resources and time. The internet may provide a method of conducting rcts which is efficent and provides access to those in remote communities. The purpose of this project is to assess the feasibility of developing a structure for conducting rcts using the internet.

Business modelling supports a variety of approaches, which are currently of significant interest for Australian organisations. This includes business process management, risk management or Enterprise Architecture design. The trend to centralised and integrated business modelling leads to projects with a high number of models, modellers, users, and modelling purposes. This phenomenon is called modelling in the large. The proposed research project explores the major issues within these projects and develops improved modelling techniques and project management approaches for large modelling initiatives. The outcomes will streamline the design, integration, maintenance and communication of models with a focus on Enterprise Systems.
