Using a prospective cohort, we aim to dissect the complexity of immune development in early life by characterizing its relationship with genetics, microbial colonization of the airways, and respiratory illness.

Myoblast fusion is a poorly understood process of crucial importance during muscle growth and repair. Furthermore, engineered myoblasts can be introduced to fuse with mature muscles, forming a stable hybrid organ within the adults, thus offering novel therapeutic possibilities in the future. In this research, we will undertake the first systemic, genome-wide approach to identify and characterise the gene networks underlying muscle fusion in vertebrates.

Tuberculosis is an enormous health problem globally and remains a threat to Australia because of our proximity to high burden countries. The development of better vaccines against TB is crucial to reducing disease and preventing transmission. We shall develop and test new TB vaccines composed of a protective TB protein and immune-stimulating molecules in dry powder which can be safely delivered to the lungs. This respirable vaccine will be used to protect against TB and boost the effects of BCG.
Novel Antifungal Strategies Using Drug Response Networks

Summary
Fungal cells are quite similar to our own making it hard to find good drug targets. This project aims to enhance current antifungal drugs with agents that interfere with iron, which is needed for fungal growth. We will see how fungal cells change the genes they use when they are treated with drugs alone and combined with molecules that mop up iron. We will then track the pathways within cells that are targets of the affected genes, and find points where these pathways can be blocked.

To receive the appropriate information about the state of our muscles, joints, organs, and skin we need a properly 'connected' sensory system. Recent evidence suggests traumatic events during early development can alter sensory connections within the spinal cord. This can lead to debilitating movement disorders, digestive diseases, and increased pain. In this study we will examine how peripheral sensory fibres connect with the appropriate nerve cells in the human spinal cord during development.

Intellectual disability affects around one per cent of Australians, and can arise from genetic abnormalities during fetal life, such as through abnormal regulation of gene expression. We have identified a novel gene, known as eurl, which controls brain assembly as well as the ability of neurons to form functional connections within the brain. We will investigate how this novel gene controls brain development, and characterise eurl as a potential therapeutic target for learning and memory.
