Summary
Cardiovascular and lower respiratory diseases are leading causes of death, show marked social gradients, and have origins in early life. We will measure cardiorespiratory health at age 11-12 years in the national Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. Summary
Cell surface mucins are protective molecules that line all the wet surface of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract. Our research has uncovered that mucins regulate cell growth and cell death. Inappropriate control by the mucins, could lead to chronic inflammation and formation of cancers. We will test how important these molecules are in the development of cancers in the intestine, and further explore the mechanism of action.
The Management of the Assets of Older People: Prevalence, practices, preferences and responses. Industry partners with the investigators, have identified the need for foundation knowledge about asset management by and on behalf of older people. The current environment of changing legislation and demography, and the extent of the assets held offer new challenges to older people, families, public and private asset managers and substitute decision makers. Australian sea anemones are a highly promising and largely unexplored source of peptides and proteins with potential therapeutic and diagnostic applications. This project aims to evaluate this potential by undertaking transcriptomic analyses of a number species of anemones from Australian waters and identifying peptides and proteins in their venoms by mass spectrometry. The proposed project is at the interface of mathematics and 'big data' applications and so the work of the project aims to provide theoretical and heuristic underpinnings useful in the algorithms and techniques of practitioners.
