The evidence is clear that strong communities and effective early intervention strategies play a key role in preventing social disadvantage later in a child's life. Through the provision of high quality training to a doctoral student, this project will have significant benefits at many levels of policy and government. Local, state and federal governments and family service providers will have the opportunity to see the effectiveness of their services on parents over an extended period of time and to learn from the project about new strategies that may be deployed to assist culturally diverse families in their communities. Through developing best practice models for managing vicarious trauma in investigators of Internet child exploitation, the project will result in enhanced job satisfaction and less burnout of workers, and reduced health costs for policing organisations. Thus the project addresses a serious occupational health issue and contributes to the goal of promoting and maintaining good health. Further, by better managing the occupational health of investigators, the project will enhance the capacity of police organisations to deliver on their mission of investigating and preventing Internet child exploitation. This in turn contributes to the reduced consumption of Internet child exploitation and the associated traumatisation of abused victims. Read moreRead less

Extensive environmental, health and socio-demographic data are routinely collected by various agencies throughout Australia. To date, it has been difficult to link separate databases and investigate possible associations between the different parameters within them. In this proposal we plan to link routinely collected health, environment and socio-demographic data from a number of databases. We then plan to develop tools for geo-referencing the data. Finally we plan to perform spatial analysis of the linked data, specifically investigating associations between environmental and social factors and childhood leukaemia, deliberate self harm and adverse birth outcomes. Linking separate databases and performing spatial analysis of georeferenced data will substantially improve the quality of public health surveillance and research in NSW. In addition, it will enable more detailed analysis of the effects of environmental exposures on health, using routine data.Read moreRead less

. Young people are faced with numerous and powerful influences to use both legal and illicit drugs, and drug education can play an important counterbalancing role in shaping a normative culture of safety, moderation and informed decision making in this group. The research will develop, implement and evaluate one all encompassing, evidence-based, drug education program for junior high school students across Victoria. The study is unique in its size and scope and will be of national benefit because its findings will influence the nature of future drug education in all secondary schools in Australia.Read moreRead less
Safe and unsafe workplace behaviour: the impact of organisational culture and climate. This APA(I) project involves a study of safety cultures of organizations and safety climates of workgroups. This APA(I) project involves a study of safety cultures of organizations and safety climates of workgroups. It will develop and trial safety interventions derived from an understanding of the normative and individual psychological contracts of safety. It is hypothesized that such contracts will impact on safety behaviors and injury rate. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Kmart and KAAL (Alcoa) who experience very different levels of risk. The ultimate aim is to develop a better understanding of the complex human systems which impact on safety behaviors and injury rates in organizations.Read moreRead less

Indigenous communities in Australia (and elsewhere) suffer from extreme disadvantage. Northern Australia and many other places face a demographic time bomb of alienated, self-destructive and culturally disoriented youth, with this manifested in violence and abuse. An evidence-based approach will build upon community strengths and knowledge moving beyond welfare or paternalistic approaches to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous young people. Ultimately the project aims to develop interventions for Indigenous youth that work towards closing the gap between the wellbeing of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.Read moreRead less
Back from the Edge: Reducing and Preventing Occupational Stress in the Remote Area Nursing Workforce. This study will improve services to remote Australia, particularly remote Indigenous communities. Three percent of the population is dispersed across this large area which is characterized by a high proportion of Indigenous people, poorer health outcomes and lower socio-economic status. The study will generate new knowledge and specific stress-reduction interventions in the workforce. These will improve retention in the remote area nursing workforce and thereby benefit employers through reductions in recruitment costs and sick leave. A stable workforce will improve service quality. Other benefits will include improved continuity of care, greater client focus and ultimately improved health outcomes. Read moreRead less
The psychological effects of wasting in Australian jockeys. It is well known that many jockeys engage in short-term, unhealthy cycles of weight loss and gain, known as 'wasting', to maintain consistent low riding-weight. The use of saunas is specially popular, with other known practices including food avoidance, laxative abuse, ingestion of diuretics and appetite suppressants, excessive exercise and self-induced vomiting. The adverse physiological effects of 'wasting' are well documented. This i ....The psychological effects of wasting in Australian jockeys. The use of saunas is specially popular, with other known practices including food avoidance, laxative abuse, ingestion of diuretics and appetite suppressants, excessive exercise and self-induced vomiting. The adverse physiological effects of 'wasting' are well documented. This investigation seeks to explore and describe the ways in which these pathogenic forms of weight control used the jockeys effect their psychological health. The primary outcome focus of the research is the formulation of recommendations for the adoption of healthy weight management practices by Australian jockeys that promote psychological well-being.Read moreRead less
Safety management system for heavy vehicle transport. Crashes involving heavy vehicles result in around 330 deaths, over 3000 serious injuries annually, and cost over $6 billion per year. Trucks deliver 72% of Australia's total freight. The quantity delivered by trucks has increased by 40% over a decade and will double over the next 20 years.
