Australian services for homeless people typically provide short to medium-term assistance and accommodation. This approach struggles to meet the complex needs of the long-term homeless. Recently there has been considerable government investment in new approaches to end long-term homelessness, but evidence supporting the efficacy of these approaches is limited. This project builds on a four year Randomised Controlled Trial of the Journey to Social Inclusion pilot-program which was designed to end long-term homelessness. The project aims to track participants for an additional two years. The research aims to provide new knowledge on what practices and factors generate positive outcomes and what factors and practices sustain positive outcomes.

Governance for Planetary Health Equity. The Laureate Fellowship will use the novel lens of Planetary Health Equity to expose the importance of addressing planetary as well as human systems in achieving global health equity, and investigate the role of governance in realizing that aim. Using international and multi-sectoral comparative analysis, it intends to elucidate how institutions and actors can enable the development of coherent policy and business practices that advance planetary health equity. Expected outcomes include the design of policies and business practices that promote planetary health equity and a governance framework that enables coherent action. The Laureate has the potential to reduce health inequities and climate change, and relieve pressure on health systems.

The project plans to explore how the current housing affordability crisis is shaping population wellbeing and socioeconomic outcomes. Housing affordability is a key driver of health-related inequalities – the dramatic rise in the cost of housing in the past decade is forcing people to make hard decisions about location and quality of housing. This project aims to provide a new framework for analysing housing affordability's long-term impact on wellbeing and socioeconomic outcomes by merging concepts from life course epidemiology on the importance of the timing, sequence and accumulation of exposure, to transition points at critical life stages from the social sciences. It plans to develop information to contribute to public discourse and improve policy in the area.

The number of Australians living without secure housing grows every year. Increasingly this community is reaching out to our public libraries for shelter, connection to others and access to resources and services. Despite this relationship, there are no public policies to guide libraries in supporting this community or in partnering with housing agencies. Using a process of particpatory design with the homeless community, public library staff and users, and housing agencies, the research builds theoretical frameworks and public policy foundations to support the design of public library services, resources and environments that will meet the needs of the Australian homeless community in our urban, regional and remote contexts.

Changing children’s chances: Exploring pathways to developmental inequities. This project aims to investigate the causes of health and developmental inequities between Australian children. Inequities are increasingly observed in Australian children’s physical health, social and emotional wellbeing, and academic learning. Such inequities are unjust, unnecessary and potentially preventable. This project aims to understand the pathways leading to these inequities by examining the many contexts in which children and their families live and grow. Through a series of innovative analyses using existing data, the project aims to identify potentially modifiable factors at the child, family, school, and community level that contribute to developmental inequities. Understanding of the most promising leverage points for interventions to reduce inequities for Australian children could be used to inform policy.
