The proposed Facility comprises a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) RF Signal Simulator which allows laboratory testing of new signal tracking and navigation solution algorithms, under different scenarios. Simulation of the operation of current and future GPS satellites, and of the new European GNSS "Galileo", is vital for testing new receiver designs. For example, the Facility could be programmed to generate a GPS satellite signal with user-selectable physical variations in the signal path, including the presence of RF jamming sources, high atmospheric disturbances, diffraction effects and multipath. As many of the signal variations are rare and/or unpredictable, the Signal Simulator is the only means to carry out such tests.Read moreRead less

The long-term integrity of engineering assets depends on the quality of their maintenance which runs into billions of dollars per year in Australia. This project aims to develop a new fundamental automated technique for the detection and diagnosis of machinery faults. The innovation lies in the ability of this technique to not depend on knowledge of fault components in the discrete wavelet packet analysis. All other work conducted to date depends on knowledge of these components and their location. The results of this work will vastly improve the costly manually based diagnostics procedures in the maintenance of plant and industrial assets.Read moreRead less
Developing a Smart Monitoring System for Leakage Currents from Insulators on Wooden Poles. Numerous wooden poles are used for electricity power transmission in urban and rural areas of Australia. Numerous wooden poles are used for electricity power transmission in urban and rural areas of Australia. Insulators suspended on poles are subject to contamination and moisture that cause partial discharge currents to flow through the wooden poles, resulting in pole fires leading to loss of power to customers and possible bush fires. This project aims at studying the characteristics of leakage currents from insulators on wooden poles in Australian conditions and developing a smart monitoring system to detect and prevent pole fires caused by leakage currents. The outcomes will reduce the risk of pole fires, hence improving public safety, reliability of power supply and sustainability of the Australian power industry.Read moreRead less

Electric braking is a vital component of the drive by-wire systems whose development is currently being supported worldwide by many automobile manufacturers. The aim of this project is to contribute to the development of an efficient fully functional electrically operated braking system. The main focus is on development of the intelligent perceptual sensors required for optimum performance of a by-wire braking system (to be commercialised by 2007). This project will also facilitate the development of professional courses for by-wire technology. Such courses will play a crucial role in maintaining the competitiveness of the Australian car component industry as by-wire technology emerges.Read moreRead less

Southern Innovation develops and markets world-leading pulse processing technologies for the rapid, accurate detection and measurement of radiation. The underlying real-time signal processing challenge relates to isolating often overlapping pulses, determining when each pulse arrived and the energy of each pulse. Recent advances in the computational power of digital signal processing boards makes it timely to develop innovative pulse processing algorithms based on optimal filtering of stochastic processes. It is expected that these algorithms will have widespread impact, both commercially for minerals exploration, materials analysis, medical imaging and security screening, and scientifically for improving the performance of synchrotrons and other equipment.Read moreRead less

Guaranteeing the safety of short welds in automotive applications. Most safety-critical welds in the automotive and related industries are of short duration (less than three seconds). We will develop a unified theoretical model of short welds which accounts for all important phenomena. Using this model, we will create the first system to check every safety-critical weld in real time, with 3D data objects that use all the data available from the non-stationary process. For example, without control loops, cars, mining and manufacturing plants cannot operate in an efficient and safe manner. To reduce costs, there has been a trend to use general purpose communication systems, such as WiFi, for feedback control. These communication systems have only limited capacity and reliability. This can lead to performance degradation and system failure. The current project aims at proposing novel robust networked control system architectures. Our results will be useful to allow industries to use standard communications technology for control, thus, alleviating costs associated with developing dedicated application specific communication infrastructure.Read moreRead less
