Summary
Multi-scale fabrication facility for complex three-dimensional surface generation from nano to macro dimensions. This facility will support advances in the manufacturing of free-form surfaces with submicron features. Its unique characteristics, such as the universal profiling ability and nanometre accuracy across large dimensions, will enable many science and engineering innovations which are presently impossible to be realised in Australia.
Robotic microsurgery: intra-operative measurement, modelling and micromanipulation control. This research will significantly improve microsurgery and minimally invasive surgery techniques, and further produce important benefits to medicine and healthcare. The project will also open new domains in the capabilities of modelling and control of complex systems with significant impact and benefits to numerous science and engineering practices.
Repetitive control systems in networked environments. Repetitive control is used in many industry applications to track periodic references and reject periodic disturbances. The development of digital technology brings in more networked control systems, greatly improving distributed manufacturing, which creates new design challenges due to network-induced constraints such as delay, data packet dropouts and cyber-attacks. Development of novel passive sampling devices for ammonia monitoring. This project will develop novel inexpensive passive samplers for ammonia which is an indicator for faecal contamination in stormwater. These devices will increase dramatically the efficiency in isolating intermittent faecal contamination sources in drainage networks by eliminating the need for extensive manual sampling and inspection operations.

Whereas current approaches are limited to defining the external geometry, this technology will permit the organization of the internal structure as well, with the potential to do so at the scale of individual cells.
