Summary
A Signal Simulation Facility for GNSS Receiver Design and Testing. The proposed Facility comprises a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) RF Signal Simulator which allows laboratory testing of new signal tracking and navigation solution algorithms, under different scenarios. Simulation of the operation of current and future GPS satellites, and of the new European GNSS "Galileo", is vital for testing new receiver designs. For example, the Facility could be programmed to generate a GPS satell ....A Signal Simulation Facility for GNSS Receiver Design and Testing. For example, the Facility could be programmed to generate a GPS satellite signal with user-selectable physical variations in the signal path, including the presence of RF jamming sources, high atmospheric disturbances, diffraction effects and multipath. As many of the signal variations are rare and/or unpredictable, the Signal Simulator is the only means to carry out such tests.Read moreRead less

Guaranteeing the safety of short welds in automotive applications. Most safety-critical welds in the automotive and related industries are of short duration (less than three seconds). We will develop a unified theoretical model of short welds which accounts for all important phenomena. Using this model, we will create the first system to check every safety-critical weld in real time, with 3D data objects that use all the data available from the non-stationary process. The outcomes will be a comp ....Guaranteeing the safety of short welds in automotive applications. Using this model, we will create the first system to check every safety-critical weld in real time, with 3D data objects that use all the data available from the non-stationary process. The outcomes will be a comprehensive understanding of short welds, which will be an essential step towards the development of more reliable welding procedures, and a weld fault monitor ready for industrial application.Read moreRead less

The resulting cost-efficiencies will advantage Australian producers in competitive global markets; our companies will be well placed to produce and install active sensor network techniques and to provide training in the associated asset management systems. Australian industry will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with the world-class research networks on emerging areas such as damage diagnosis, prognosis and control, and structural repair.Read moreRead less

For example, without control loops, cars, mining and manufacturing plants cannot operate in an efficient and safe manner. To reduce costs, there has been a trend to use general purpose communication systems, such as WiFi, for feedback control. These communication systems have only limited capacity and reliability. This can lead to performance degradation and system failure. The current project aims at proposing novel robust networked control system architectures. Our results will be useful to allow industries to use standard communications technology for control, thus, alleviating costs associated with developing dedicated application specific communication infrastructure.Read moreRead less
Vector quantization approaches to nonlinear stochastic estimation. Many problems in health, economics, telecommunications and industrial control can be formulated as estimation problems with uncertain data. This project is aimed at developing a novel class of algorithms aimed at high complexity estimation problems. If successful, the project will provide new approaches to these problems.
Joint modelling and recognition of linguistic and paralinguistic speech information. A new modelling framework will be developed exploiting interdependence between linguistic and paralinguistic cues to improve automatic recognition of emotion-related information. Applications in the high-tech industry include automatic routing of angry telephone customers or pre-suicidal crisis centre callers to specialist operators/clinicians.
Advanced Processing for Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging. There is currently considerable interest around the world in imaging systems that can 'see' through-the-walls. This project is at the cutting edge of through-the-wall radar imaging research and technology. It will benefit both the defence and security industries, and position Australia among the leading countries in this technology, as only a handful of research teams around the world have the necessary background and expertise in this area ....Advanced Processing for Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging.
