Summary
This fellowship involves 3 inter-related bodies of work focussing on adolescent health. Firstly, I will use existing data to better describe the health needs of adolescents living in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents. Secondly, I will identify priority areas for better data collection and explore novel methods to fill key gaps. Thirdly, I will investigate how the described health profiles can be translated into health action.
Chronic Kidney Disease In Indigenous Australians: Using Existing Data To Improve Outcomes

Summary
Indigenous Australians not only suffer from a high burden of kidney disease, but also have poorer disease outcomes compared to non-Indigenous Australians. My research program is focused on improving outcomes for Indigenous Australians with kidney disease by using existing health care data to work out where and why their outcomes are poor within the health care system. It will enable us to identify ways to improve health care systems for Indigenous Australians.
Spatial analysis of a linked environmental, health and social data base. Extensive environmental, health and socio-demographic data are routinely collected by various agencies throughout Australia. To date, it has been difficult to link separate databases and investigate possible associations between the different parameters within them. In this proposal we plan to link routinely collected health, environment and socio-demographic data from a number of databases. Finally we plan to perform spatial analysis of the linked data, specifically investigating associations between environmental and social factors and childhood leukaemia, deliberate self harm and adverse birth outcomes. Linking separate databases and performing spatial analysis of georeferenced data will substantially improve the quality of public health surveillance and research in NSW. This project investigates inequalities in cardiovascular disease risk, incidence, healthcare and outcomes, focussing on socio-economic status, rurality, mental health and Aboriginality. It will work with partner organisations and use a range of data sources - including representative population data, clinical datasets, large scale linked data and qualitative data - to better understand variation in cardiovascular disease, to reduce inequalities and improve outcomes.
Disparities In Care And Outcome For People With Lung Cancer

Summary
This thesis will investigate disparities in lung cancer care and outcomes, provide an overview of lung cancer disparities in NSW and seek to identify and assess an intervention to reduce lung cancer disparities. This will involve a systematic review of cancer disparity measures, empirical research to investigate patterns and predictors of disparity. Mixed methods will be used to investigate observed disparities and identify interventions to improve cancer care and outcomes in vulnerable groups.
Unequal futures: A critical investigation of regional and sociocultural variations in teenage pregnancy. The overarching aim of this project is to investigate geographical and sociocultural variations in teenage pregnancy in Australia, encompassing the over-representation of young Indigenous teenage mothers. It considers the implications of these differences for government policy.
