2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure services including Reasearch Link Australia.

We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Prediction, inference and their application to modelling correlated data. This project aims to create new, improved methods for prediction and making inference about predictions for a variety of correlated data types through inventing sophisticated and novel resampling schemes such as the generalised fast bootstrap and repeated partial permutation. The research will impact on both the theory and practice of statistics and on substantive fields which use mixed or compositional models to analyse dependent data. This will be a significant improvement in the assessment and stability of statistical models in areas such as social, ecological and geological sciences.

The history, operation and efficacy of the Custody Notification Service. This project aims to assess the efficacy of the Custody Notification Service (CNS), an Australian innovation for preventing Indigenous deaths in police custody. The risk of Indigenous deaths in police custody remains unacceptably high. This project will focus on two jurisdictions where the CNS has been operating for over fifteen years to provide an in-depth socio-legal investigation of the history and operation of the service. Using legal analysis and empirical research, the project is expected to develop tools for evaluation and identify ‘best practice’ for optimal operation. This should produce significant knowledge and guidance for policy-makers, academics, and frontline service providers, including lawyers and police, towards the prevention of deaths in custody.

Building economic development through psychosocial intervention. This project is the first study that reduces poverty and increases productivity in a post-conflict country by addressing the psychosocial problems that impede the capacity of a workforce to effectively learn and apply skills. Although conducted in Aceh, Indonesia, these findings may show how to reduce poverty in all countries affected by conflict.

FGDs are a common way of gathering qualitative data in Aboriginal health services research, however, there have been no studies as to whether they are appropriate research tools in such contexts. The aim of this project is to generate the knowledge to inform the accountable, culturally appropriate, ethically sound and methodologically rigorous use of FGDs in qualitative Aboriginal health service research.

Alcohol and tobacco use among lesbian, bisexual and queer identifying women. This project aims to examine practices of alcohol and tobacco use among lesbian, bisexual and queer-identifying (LBQ) women, which are considerably higher compared to heterosexual women. By using an innovative, longitudinal qualitative approach, this project expects to generate new knowledge regarding the cultural and social forces that shape higher rates of alcohol and tobacco use among LBQ women, and to better understand their impacts. It is anticipated that the project will enhance the capacity of health promotion and policy organisations to meet the alcohol management and smoking cessation needs of this population. Findings from this project should help to alleviate health and social inequalities experienced by LBQ women.

Contraceptive technologies and reproductive choice among immigrant women. New immigrant and refugee women often have poor access to information, advice and support about contraceptive choices. Working with key immigrant and sexual health partner organisations, this project will identify ways to enhance choice and agency to ensure accessible services and optimal outcomes for women and their families.

Risky business: a qualitative investigation into Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) risk and vulnerability among sex workers in three Pacific countries. This interview based research will investigate the sex work and HIV prevention issues in three Pacific countries (Palau, Tonga and Tuvalu). The study will provide evidence needed to develop interventions and services that respond to the local context and circumstances of the sex work order, and guide an effective response in these countries.

What will it take to decrease socio-economic inequalities in obesity? There is little understanding of how the increasing prevalence of obesity, and its prevention and management, may contribute to socio-economic inequalities in health. This project aims to identify policies that are most likely to both decrease the prevalence of obesity and decrease associated inequalities in health.

Evaluation of an Instrument to Assess the Needs of Indigenous Patients with Cancer. There is an urgent need to address the differentials in health outcomes for Indigenous populations through a variety of programs addressing access to cancer care. An important part of any health program is measurement of health outcomes. This proposed research will develop and evaluate culturally sensitive needs assessment tools to ensure that the future of service provision is targeted to meet the priority needs of Indigenous cancer patients. Armed with an appropriate understanding of Indigenous peoples needs and how to assess these, care provision will be able to improve and maintain good health and also ensure that resource allocation is provided with considered economic, social and community benefits.

Veteran suicide: investigating the historical and social dimensions . This project aims to address veteran suicide by conducting an historical and cultural analysis of the ways government, the military and the community have understood, governed, and serviced veterans from 1914-present. This project will generate new knowledge, moving beyond orthodox medical and cultural assessments to explore wider historical, cultural and sociological relations of veteran suicide, including civil military relations, and the influence of the veteran sector and families and community. The project will develop an innovative survey that will form the foundation of a longitudinal social health and wellbeing dataset on veterans, and contribute to policy and service provision to reduce veteran suicide and improve their wellbeing.
