Application Of A Novel Research Design To Aid Disinvestment From Existing Health Technologies With Uncertain Effectiveness, Cost-effectiveness And/or Safety.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $258,643.00
    Summary
Health policy makers and managers need to make choices between funding some health services and not others. This decision is made difficult when there is limited evidence as to whether the health service in question is effective, cost-effective and safe. Removing a health service when there is uncertainty exposes patients to risk of poorer outcomes. Building The Evidence Base Of First 1000 Days Australia: An Evaluation Of Implementation Outcomes

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $836,504.00
    Summary
This project aims to evaluate the implementation of a coordinated, community-based approach to service engagement, conceived of and led by Indigenous people, designed to foster resilience, leadership and innovation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families by focusing service systems on the early period of child development, from preconception to the age of two: the First 1000 Days.

Quality Improvement In Indigenous Primary Health Care: Leveraging Effective Ambulatory Practices (LEAP)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,144,570.00
    Summary
Although much is known about best practice in quality improvement in Indigenous Primary Health Care Services, getting this into practice remains challenging. The LEAP project works in partnership with health services to i) identify challenges faced when improving care; ii) design and trial interventions to address these challenges; and iii) evaluate how this process works in different settings.

A Network Of Sites And ‘up-skilled’ Therapists To Deliver Best Practice Stroke Rehabilitation Of The Upper Limb.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $955,910.00
    Summary
We aim, through our partnership, to bring better therapy to more stroke survivors. Effective therapies are available to improve hand function but survivors are not currently receiving these. We will systematically address this evidence-practice gap using knowledge-transfer methods to up-skill therapists and change practice behaviours. A network of sites and up-skilled therapists will deliver this therapy and sustain change. A template will guide future translational activities.

Identifying And Addressing Gaps In Australia’s Adolescent HPV Vaccination Program

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $689,723.00
    Summary
Australia was the first country to implement a national vaccination program for human papillomavirus (HPV) which is the primary cause of cervical cancer. However national vaccination coverage remains suboptimal at 77% in girls. Through a partnership between researchers and health departments (Tasmania, Western Australia and New South Wales) we will conduct research to determine barriers to vaccination and evaluate the cost and impact of innovative strategies to increase vaccination coverage.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Implementation Research Using The Experiences And Perspectives Of Women And Health Professionals To Internationally Translate Guidelines And Evidence Into Practice

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $695,543.00
    Summary
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects up to 1 in 5 women. It is associated with a high risk of obesity, infertility, diabetes, and heart disease. We are updating guidelines for PCOS, yet it is not known how to help women and health professionals use these guidelines. This project will involve women with PCOS and health professionals working together to design high quality resources and link these into clinical care to improve the management of PCOS. This will lead to improved health outcomes.

Prioritising Responses Of Nurses To Deteriorating Patient Observations (PRONTO)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $459,688.00
    Summary
Vital signs are the most common assessment technique employed in healthcare. If vital signs of deterioration are missed, misinterpreted or mismanaged, then patient harm and death may result. Early detection requires frequent and accurate measurement of vital signs by nurses, intervention and escalation to appropriate clinicians. This study will measure the effectiveness of an intervention to improve nurses vital sign measurement, treatment and escalation of patients with abnormal vital signs.

Improving Evidence Based Care For Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $533,442.00
    Summary
There is an urgent need to improve care for men with advanced prostate cancer if we wish to improve their survival. Compelling new evidence suggests we need to alter current practice by offering radiotherapy to high risk men – but will clinicians change their practice? We will develop and test ways to change practice within a network of 9 hopsitals. The study will provide crucial evidence about how to embed the recommended care into practice to improve outcomes for men with prostate cancer.

Evidence Innovation: Transforming The Efficiency Of Systematic Review

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $928,417.00
    Summary
Australia invests considerable resources developing reliable summaries of research evidence to understand the benefits and risks of drugs and health programs. We will use information technologies and ‘crowdsourcing’ to improve the production of evidence summaries, evaluate this approach in a randomised study, and facilitate implementation throughout Australia. This will improve the translation of research into health practice and policy, reducing research waste and improving health outcomes.
