Dynamics of word recognition: new insight from the reach-to-touch paradigm. This project will introduce a new behavioural reach-to-touch paradigm for studying basic cognitive processes such as word recognition. The advantage of this paradigm is that it is able to measure cognitive processes moment-by-moment as they unfold over time. This will provide new insights into the temporal dynamics of basic cognitive processing.
Resolving fundamental problems in the dating of marine shell in the tropics. This project will model variability in the way carbon is distributed in marine environments and animals in tropical Australasia. Results will provide key enabling tools for accurate dating of marine materials, realising the potential of previous research and forming the basis for accurate reconstructions of cultural, sea-level and climate changed.
Providing children with a healthy start to life: promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviours during early childhood. Early childhood (0-5 yrs), when health behaviours develop and may track into later life, represents promise as a time to positively impact physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Early childhood (0-5 yrs), when health behaviours develop and may track into later life, represents promise as a time to positively impact physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Yet study of these behaviours in 3-5 yr olds is only emerging, and is almost non-existent in younger children. This project aims to understand predictors of these behaviours using a suite of longitudinal studies, including objective measures, and will commence as early as 3-mths of age. It will study strategies for promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviours during early childhood, by investigating mechanisms of behaviour change in existing interventions to inform new strategies with potential to provide children with a healthy start to life.Read moreRead less
The Gender Politics of Global Economic Competitiveness in Southeast Asia. States such as Malaysia face similar economic challenges to Australia - for example maintaining economic competitiveness in the face of rising competition from low(er) wage labour countries (especially China), maintaining and enhancing a competitive ICT infrastructure and building successful and sustainable technology policies. Critically assessing the role that women and the family can play in Malaysia's attempts to transition to a more knowledge intensive economy will invariably open up policy lessons for Australia.Read moreRead less
Mathematical explanation. The best mathematical proofs tell us why some mathematical fact holds, not simply that it holds. However to understand how one piece of mathematics explains another piece of mathematics is poorly understood. This project will develop a philosophical account of mathematical explanation. In particular, it will show how mathematics can explain further mathematics as well as how it can explain physical phenomena.
Contested multilateralism 2.0 and Asia Pacific security. This project aims to examine the foreign policy choices of five major powers – the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Australia – toward multilateral institutions in the Asia Pacific after the Cold War through an economic-security-nexus model. Through in-depth theoretical and empirical case studies, this project will explore when states are more likely to rely on rule-based institutions or to use power-based strategies, such as a ....Contested multilateralism 2.0 and Asia Pacific security. Through in-depth theoretical and empirical case studies, this project will explore when states are more likely to rely on rule-based institutions or to use power-based strategies, such as alliance formation, to pursue security in world politics. This project aims to provide policy insights for Australian policy makers to conduct a sensible and effective “Asia policy” in the 21st century.Read moreRead less
Situated Anomaly Detection in an Open Environment. This project aims to investigate situated anomaly detection in an open environment. Existing anomaly detection techniques follow the setting of conventional machine learning and discover anomalies from a set of collected data. In contrast, this project proposes to develop the next-generation of anomaly detection algorithms by learning from interactions with an open environment, which enables the discovery of new anomalies and the early detection ....Situated Anomaly Detection in an Open Environment. This project aims to investigate situated anomaly detection in an open environment. Existing anomaly detection techniques follow the setting of conventional machine learning and discover anomalies from a set of collected data. In contrast, this project proposes to develop the next-generation of anomaly detection algorithms by learning from interactions with an open environment, which enables the discovery of new anomalies and the early detection of anomalies. The established theories and developed algorithms will advance frontier technologies in machine intelligence. The success of the project will contribute to a wide range of real applications in cybersecurity, defence and finance, bringing massive social and economic benefits. Read moreRead less

The proposed project will generate highly significant, fundamental advances in separation science by developing new stationary phases and separation technologies suitable for the analysis of very complex samples which cannot be addressed by current methods. These technologies will be applied in a wide range of areas of national importance including pharmaceutical analysis and drug discovery; environmental, clinical, and forensic analysis; energy generation and foods. The project will also lead to very significant new intellectual property having extremely high commercial potential worldwide, and thereby generates the promise of considerable direct financial returns to Australia.Read moreRead less
Strengthening accountability for grand corruption crimes. This project will analyse and explain the development of an international responsibility to hold corrupt heads of state accountable by targeting their illicit wealth. The new knowledge generated will help academics understand this new norm and the resulting legal regime, and help policy-makers to better hold corrupt leaders accountable.
Literature and Science in the Early Middle Ages. This project aims to investigate the interplay between early medieval science and the literary imagination. This project aims to investigate the interplay between early medieval science and the literary imagination. The project focuses on Anglo-Saxon England, which provides a fully developed and well-preserved vernacular literary record, beside a learned Latin literary culture. It aims to investigate an important reciprocal relationship at a transitional moment in Western culture: the ways scientific learning influenced the early medieval literary imagination, and how the literary imagination influenced early medieval science. Study of the relationship between science and literature provides an insight into how people have understood the world around them and their relationship with it, interpreted in the light of inherited knowledge and the imagination.Read moreRead less
