Signalling Pathways In Antibody-Mediated Renal Injury

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $113,296.00
    Summary
Many types of kidney disease are induced by antibody binding to the kidney which initiates a damaging response by cells of the immune system. Current therapies for such diseases rely upon toxic immunosuppressive drugs. This project will examine one specific mechanism by which immune cells are activated by antibody to cause injury in human and experimental renal injury. These studies will determine whether this specific mechanism is a suitable target for developing new therapeutic drugs.

Understanding And Modulating Hyperinflammation Caused By Influenza Viruses

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $425,048.00
    Summary
In humans, highly pathogenic influenza A virus (IAV) infections can be fatal, as the disease is untreatable with available vaccine or anti-viral drugs. My fellowship aims to advance our knowledge of the mechanisms by which the immune system induces and regulates inflammation during IAV infection, which can be both helpful and detrimental in fighting the infection. This is critical for identifying and developing new therapies for severe IAV infections in the future.

The Role Of Necroptosis In Development, The Immune System And Autoimmune Pathology

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $454,105.00
    Summary
Programmed cell death plays critical roles in development and cell-turnover in the adult. Defects in this process can cause cancer or autoimmune diseases. We will use genetic and biochemical approaches to define the individual roles of necroptosis, a newly described cell death process, and those overlapping with apoptosis in normal development and cell-turnover as well as in cancer and autoimmune diseases. The objective of this work is to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention i .... Programmed cell death plays critical roles in development and cell-turnover in the adult. Targeting Vitamin-reactive T Cells For Enhanced Immunity

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,590,576.00
    Summary
A specialised set of T cells called mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells react against bacteria and yeast, and reside at mucosal sites where the body's immune defences are often breached, e.g. respiratory tract and intestinal mucosa. This study seeks to define the molecular signals driving the function of MAIT cells, particularly during infections. This information may lead to methods tailored to manipulating MAIT cells therapeutically.

Defining Immune Regulation And T Cell Responses During Chronic Infectious Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $714,062.00
    Summary
Chronic infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and leishmaniasis are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. They are all characterised by severe immune dysfunction. We will study a parasitic infection to identify important immune cell populations and molecules that promote chronic infectious disease. This knowledge will enable the development of better treatments and vaccines for range of infectious diseases that affect people in many parts of the world.
