A unified approach for estimating coastal flood risk. The project aims to develop a unified approach to quantifying flood risk. Because flooding is caused by multiple mechanisms such as extreme rainfall, storm surge and astronomical tide, accurately estimating flood levels in the Australian coastal zone is challenging. This project will study the fundamental behaviour of natural soils under varying environmental conditions such as suction, moisture, temperature and loading conditions. The outcomes of the work will improve infrastructure design methods and reduce damage costs associated with natural soils.
The characterisation of wastewater distribution patterns for the production of decision support systems for pathogenic risk analysis in water catchments. The project will aim to collate data and map base-level distribution patterns of molecular and microbial markers of human sewage and natural/agricultural contamination with reference to diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. Modelling and simulation of instabilities in unsaturated soils due to wetting. Ground instabilities due to wetting are a critical issue that will be investigated through this project via the development of risk assessment tools. A rational engineering approach and calculation framework will be developed in order to predict failures and facilitate the design of new safer structures.
