Visual Solutions for Automated Translation Between Spoken and Signed Languages. We propose to build a robust visual speech recognition system that analyzes images of spoken language and achieves a recognition of the utterances with at least human expert recognition rates. We propose to build a robust visual speech recognition system that analyzes images of spoken language and achieves a recognition of the utterances with at least human expert recognition rates. This visual speech recognition system will then be integrated with our existing gesture recognition system to improve performance, just as humans combine visual and audio data for language understanding. The result will be a system providing translation between English and the Australian sign language Auslan in a practical application domain. Significantly, our work will provide insights into the cognitive models of neural activity linking language and gesture.

Developing Reliable Bio-Crypto Features for Mobile Template Protection. Cost of identity theft crimes were at multi-million dollars in Australia in 2007. Technically this is due to the fact that conventional personal identification number and token based security mechanisms cannot identify genuine users. Biometric fingerprint security systems emerge as a promising solution. However protection of the mobile embedded fingerprint template itself is an unresolved problem. The project aims to develop new ways designing bio-cryptosystems that provide strong security strength. The project will bring new body of knowledge into this field and place Australia in the forefront of this research, and also result in strengthened security of IT infrastructure and systems for industries.

SCADA systems are computerized systems that control and monitor industrial and critical infrastructures, such as power grid, gas and water facilities and nuclear power plants. Many cyber-attacks on SCADA systems make such systems vulnerable. Also there is an increasing risk that SCADA vulnerabilities could be exploited by terrorist organizations. The security of SCADA systems of critical infrastructures has enormous and direct impact to our national security, economy and social life because of potential disasters that could happen from natural causes as well as malicious attacks. This project aims to investigate the relevant issues and provide efficient and reliable technological solutions to detect and prevent such problems.

Striving to become a knowledge-based nation is dependent upon the effective adoption, diffusion and implementation of ICT throughout the business community. The developing world markets, brought about by e-commerce and the increased ability to trade globally facilitated by e-markets, have created significant opportunities for Australian organisations. This research will produce a dynamic model that can be used to not only evaluate e-marketplace participation but a wide range of Internet applications. The research will provide Australian managers with the foundation of knowledge needed to guide and support their decision-making when implementing new technology.

The operation of filtering is an important part of most modern communication engineering systems. Many important problems, which arise naturally from communications engineering applications, can be formulated as nonconvex optimization problems and nonlinear semi-infinite and/or semi-definite optimization problems. New optimization theory, in combination with novel computationally efficient solution methods, and efficient hardware implementation will be developed. The outcomes will enhance Australia's reputation in this cutting edge research and facilitate opportunity for international collaboration as well as commercial opportunity. The project will also provide an excellent environment for the training of junior researchers in the area.
