Advances in positron emission tomography now allow specific pathological features of many brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease to be measured with a brain scan during life. This Fellowship will assist Professor Rowe and his team in their world leading work on new PET scanning techniques to improve diagnosis and assist the development of treatment for Alzheimer's and other degenerative diseases of the brain.
This fellowship will allow the applicant to continue his studies into understanding and intervening in osteoarthritis. He will use a combination of observational studies and clinical trials to achieve this purpose.

Summary
Determining treatment options for cancer currently relies on the size and extent of tumour deposits on imaging, combined with a biopsy. However, this approach fails to recognise the ability of tumours to evolve components that are, or become, resistant to treatment. My laboratory uses advanced molecular imaging, targeted biopsies, animal models and genetic analysis to detect and understand the basis of such resistance and thereby develop new, targeted treatments to improve patient outcomes.

Molecular imaging using a scan technique called positron emission tomography, enables detection and measurement of specific pathological features of disease such as the amyloid plaques of Alzheimer’s disease. This project will develop this technology for other aspects of brain disorders including dementias, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury and schizophrenia and use it to assist development of therapies and improve clinical diagnosis nation wide.
Discovery To Therapy Implementation In Acute Stroke

Summary
Advances in acute stroke therapies are occurring rapidly but challenges remain in their safe and effective delivery to stroke sufferers. This research focuses on testing a potentially superior ‘clot busting’ drug therapy for acute stroke and on identifying reasons why one of the most widely used current therapies carries a risk of significant harm due to bleeding into the brain. The work also investigates how to better implement the newest form of acute therapy, mechanical blood clot extraction.
Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in Australia, especially in young populations. Although many patients recover uneventfully following mild TBI, complications such as prolonged symptoms, depression and cognitive deterioration may occur. With considerable advancements in neuroimaging and cognitive assessment in recent years, newer techniques may provide a window to directly observe changes that accompany mild TBI.

Summary
The foundation of this proposal leverages my current and planned program of osteoarthritis research to investigate the challenges of prevention, pain and delivery of care. These research initiatives are readily translatable, will make inroads into this prevalent and disabling disorder, have international impact and rely upon a close synergy between my research work and clinical practice.
This Fellowship will focus on the development of novel therapeutics for cancer, and identify mechanisms for selection of treatments best suited to individual patients. It will also develop innovative strategies to identify cancer through molecular imaging techniques.
Stroke is a devastating disease affecting 50,000 Australians and over 5 million people globally every year. The overall aims are to develop better knowledge, better tools and more effective strategies to treat and prevent stroke. Projects include discovery of new genetic stroke risk factors, better management of recognised risk factors, trials of treatment strategies for acute stroke, and the investigation of strategies for more effective implementation of treatments.
