Summary
High blood pressure is a significant health problem and may result from the kidneys not being able to get rid of salt properly. The mechanisms underlying this are unclear. I will investigate the role of a kidney protein, called AMPK, in salt excretion in mice. I will also look at the effects that diabetes and obesity have on the function of this protein. Summary
Hypertensive diabetic patients are at greater risk of developing kidney disease and are often resistant to anti-hypertensive drug therapies. Removing the nerves to the kidneys can lower blood pressure however little is known of changes that occur to the nerves within the kidney in diabetes. This proposal will investigate how nerves within the kidney contribute to diabetic and diabetic-hypertensive kidney disease and whether removing these nerves slows the progression of disease.

Summary
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia. Raised blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension, PH) predicts a worse prognosis in patients with COPD. The mechanisms contributing to PH are incompletely understood. We aim to determine the role of lung hyperinflation in contributing to the development of PH in COPD. We also aim to identify a sub-group of patients that develop severe PH which may benefit from specific therapy.

Summary
Cirrhosis of the liver due to chronic hepatitis and other common liver diseases is now a major cause of illness and death in Australia. This project will examine how a hormone system called the renin angiotensin system contributes to the development of liver damage in these diseases. We will study whether drugs targeting this system can be used to reduce liver scarring and prevent the development of cirrhosis and its complications.
The prevalence of maternal obesity is alarmingly high in Australia and the western world. However, there is little understanding of how obesity of the mother affects the development of the kidney of the fetus and, in turn, how this affects the risk of these offspring developing cardiovascular and renal disease in adulthood. I hope to address the gaps in this knowledge in my studies. This information is critical in order to develop appropriate health care to those born to obese mothers.
