This project aims to explore how interactive systems can encourage their users to try new things. This is made possible by recent developments in artificial intelligence that can estimate what will make users curious. This project expects to generate new knowledge about how interactive technology can encourage diverse behaviour by stimulating curiosity. Expected outcomes include a framework for how to design interactive systems that encourage users to try new things, and a greater theoretical understanding of how to diversify user behaviour.Read moreRead less
Affective sensing technology for the detection and monitoring of depression and melancholia. This project will develop reliable and affective sensing technology and evaluate it as an objective measure of depressive disorders; a leading cause of disability worldwide. Outcomes will significantly support and aid clinicians in their diagnosis and treatment, thus providing a major breakthrough with significant research, healthcare and commercial possibilities.

This proposal aims to develop a unified computational framework which enables non-expert users to co-design and fabricate specialised physical activity sensors to address individualised sensing problems in applications such as rehabilitation, age-care and sports. Specifically, we will develop an analytical framework to classify complex sensing problems into fabricable primitive classes, namely i) conditional – limits of activity, ii) differential – frequency of activity and iii) integrational – cumulative activity. And a co-design interface to synthesize them into complex activity sensors to fit individualised needs. Finally, we will evaluate the framework by deploying the created sensors in real-world settings and gathering data.Read moreRead less
Cognitive intelligent information processing and presentation in navigation. This project aims to develop a personalised navigation system to provide effective augmented-reality (AR)-based support information, built on different navigation preference and the momentary cognitive workload of the user. This will immediately encourage users to become aware of their surroundings and continuous use will facilitate the development of navigation skills. This project aims to develop a personalised navigation system to provide effective augmented-reality (AR)-based support information, built on different navigation preference and the momentary cognitive workload of the user. This will immediately encourage users to become aware of their surroundings and continuous use will facilitate the development of navigation skills. It is expected that this research will advance scientific knowledge about individual differences in navigation ability. It will significantly enhance spatial learning and alleviate the apparent decline in navigational ability experienced across the life span, benefiting the aged population in Australia by enabling them to live longer independent lives.Read moreRead less
Remote presence for guidance on physical tasks. This project aims to transform remote collaboration on physical tasks. This could be overcome by sharing non-verbal cues, designing systems to account for cultural issues, and using a new model of communication. This project will develop theories and interaction methods for remote guidance based on natural non-verbal communication cues and cultural issues. This project is expected to benefit industries with widely distributed multi-cultural workforces such as mining, defence and medicine.Read moreRead less

The aim of the project is to generate theoretical knowledge on how to govern agile teams effectively. Effective governance of software development projects is essential for companies to protect their information technology investments. Nowadays, companies have migrated to agile software development where requirements and solutions evolve iteratively and change frequently; yet formal approaches to governance (eg steering committee and detailed plans) are ineffective and impede flexibility, agility and creativity. This project aims to identify informal governance approaches for agile projects based on team embeddedness and network theory. With this knowledge, management could ensure projects deliver value at an acceptable cost, quality and timescale.Read moreRead less

The project will develop new knowledge by better understanding of how IT transforms work and enable digital nomadism, the motivations and values of workers and their clients/organisations engaged in digital nomadism and the implications and consequences of digital nomadism for workers and clients/organisations. The project is expected to have a significant impact on policy and public discourse by providing an in-depth explanation and understanding of digital nomadism based on rigorous research.Read moreRead less
Evidence-based Management for Enterprise Social Networking Success. This project intends to develop a methodology for the successful introduction of enterprise social networks (ESNs). ESNs are an important new technology that promises increased collaboration, making businesses more innovative and responsive. Yet, while some organisations adopt ESN organically, many tightly-managed ESN projects fail. Because ESN are not directed at predefined tasks but bring about new ways of working, traditional ....Evidence-based Management for Enterprise Social Networking Success. This project intends to develop a methodology for the successful introduction of enterprise social networks (ESNs). ESNs are an important new technology that promises increased collaboration, making businesses more innovative and responsive. Yet, while some organisations adopt ESN organically, many tightly-managed ESN projects fail. Because ESN are not directed at predefined tasks but bring about new ways of working, traditional theory and methods of IT introduction are challenged. This project aims to create and test a new theory that frames ESN introduction as guided user experimentation, addressing this emerging IT management problem both theoretically and practically.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a theoretical framework for sensing and detecting human activities based on wireless radio signals. The framework advances the state-of-the-art by discovering the fundamental theory, and defining a set of principles to guide practical system design. The framework will be validated and its scientific merit demonstrated through building several applications such as contactless human activity detection and vital signs monitoring. This should benefit existing hospital and clinical patient services and promote home-care and self-care services at nationwide.Read moreRead less
