Uptalk in Australian English Intonation. Australian English speakers often use rising instead of falling intonation at the end of sentences which are not questions. This phenomenon of uptalk is one of the unique traits of the Australian English accent. The project will model uptalk by analyzing spoken dialogues from 150 speakers from three major populations, Sydney, Melbourne, and regional Victoria. The intonation patterns of regional and non-Sydney populations have been poorly investigated ....Uptalk in Australian English Intonation. In providing a new way of linking autobiography and biography with the history of identity and of the self, this project will open new avenues for the study of history which will be important in Australia and internationally. Its focus on the British world will also bring Australian writing and experience into a broader international framework. How humans negotiate such scenes has not been solved, a fact highlighted by attempts to build machines to respond to speech, warnings etc., in real-world situations with room reverberation, different talkers, and background noise. This project will bring contemporary theories on artificial intelligence into conversation with ancient Greek and Indian philosophy. Turing proposed that a machine that could imitate a human's conversational abilities would count as thinking. The ancient Greeks and Indians supposed that there were mindful things, like the cosmos as a whole, that would not pass such a test. Why is there such disagreement? We will learn ....Mindful things: cross-cultural perspectives on the criteria for intelligence. This project will bring contemporary theories on artificial intelligence into conversation with ancient Greek and Indian philosophy. Time and timelessness in Aboriginal societies as exemplified in Ngarinyin body-imagery. My project is an investigation of northern Kimberley trading practices, arguing against some pervasive views in the Aboriginalist literature which cast Aboriginal people and cultures as emphasising timelessness and de-emphasising human creativity. Kimberley trading/sharing practices, I suggest, show that exchanges (at various levels of formality) between groups and individuals are locally experienced as an ac ....Time and timelessness in Aboriginal societies as exemplified in Ngarinyin body-imagery. My project is an investigation of northern Kimberley trading practices, arguing against some pervasive views in the Aboriginalist literature which cast Aboriginal people and cultures as emphasising timelessness and de-emphasising human creativity. Kimberley trading/sharing practices, I suggest, show that exchanges (at various levels of formality) between groups and individuals are locally experienced as an active and ongoing participation in the creation of the bodies of kin and of the country itself. This is done in a way which actively participates in, rather than merely reproduces, the creative travels of the first ancestral beings.
