This project aims to develop the next generation of elite industrial hemp cultivars, grown for their seed with high protein and oil contents, that are drought resistant and make minimal THC, teamed with research into their feminisation to provide a safer and better method of producing premium female seed to supply to growers. Benefits include prevention of severe losses in vegetable Bras .... Through successful identification of host resistance in vegetable Brassicas to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and determining the factors associated with this resistance, breeders, for the first time, will be able to develop varieties with resistance against this difficult-to-manage pathogen. Benefits include prevention of severe losses in vegetable Brassicas from Sclerotinia, and more viable and sustainable production with less reliance upon fungicides and toxic or ineffective fumigants. This research addresses the National Research Priority, an environmentally sustainable Australia, and the priority goal transforming existing industries, and will particularly benefit Australian horticultural communities.

Australian researchers need access to state-of-the-art instrumentation in microscopy and microanalysis to remain competitive on the international stage. Nationally Australia has established excellent facilities and access regimes but there still remain areas where access to routine instrumentation is poor. Increased capacity is needed in South Australia for high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), as well as capability for environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The need is highlighted by the recent establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Photonics and the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics, both of which need this capacity and capability for characterisation at EM levels. Research organisations across the state will benefit from access to the proposed instrumentation.

However adoption of fruit crops, many of which, including table grape, have temperate origins, requires intensive management. Despite years of agronomic R&D, production remains variable du .... Despite years of agronomic R&D, production remains variable due to a lack of fundamental knowledge on how climate impacts on the development cycle, particularly flowering, required to produce fruit. This proposal will carry out basic research to provide knowledge that will enable consistent production and expansion of table grape and other temperate crop industries.
