The project, assisted by developments in robotics technology, produces a leading-edge computational model for analysing complex and non-linear patterns in architectural space, form and program from a social and cultural perspective. Decorum as an Idea in Architecture, from the Renaissance to the Present. Examines the theory and practice of decorum in architecture from the Renaissance to the present day. The principal aims are to set decorum within the history of ideas and to establish the relevance of the concept to modernism and contemporary debates on the nature of architecture. The project will be empirically innovative and significant to both historians and theorists. The expected outcome is a book-length study.
Understanding the lessons of Australia's Gold Coast through the late 20th century debate on criticality and instrumentality in architecture. This project will investigate the role of architecture in the western city through problems in 20th century architectural theory. It will show how the Gold Coast offers new insights into contemporary architecture and will result in two closely related books: an architectural history of the Gold Coast; and a new account of contemporary architectural theory.
Campus: Building Modern Australian Universities. This project plans to examine the post-World War Two evolution of the Australian university campus. Modern campuses created opportunities for the realisation of innovative solutions in urban planning, architecture and landscape. The project plans to reveal the physical impacts of political, institutional, social and cultural demands through comparative thematic investigation, digital visualisation and detailed case studies. Foregrounding landscape ....Campus: Building Modern Australian Universities. This project plans to examine the post-World War Two evolution of the Australian university campus. Modern campuses created opportunities for the realisation of innovative solutions in urban planning, architecture and landscape. The project plans to reveal the physical impacts of political, institutional, social and cultural demands through comparative thematic investigation, digital visualisation and detailed case studies. To establish a chronology for Early Gothic 1100-1170 in the Paris Basin. The aim is to identify, from every example of a single repeatable type of decoration - foliage - the more innovative carvers of northern France between 1100 and 1170, and by analysing the evolution of each man's personal style, to date the key buildings. This will provide a coherent foundation for a much-needed chronology of Early Gothic. Current dating is far from uniform, being individual reflections on style not based on ....To establish a chronology for Early Gothic 1100-1170 in the Paris Basin. It will focus on leading practitioners, advocates, public intellectuals, and community critics in an ideas-centred intellectual history that fills a major knowledge gap. The critical transition away from ....An Intellectual History of Modern Australian Planning 1900-2000. Urban planning is forward-looking but is constantly leveraging knowledge from the past. This original project will investigate the key ideas which have shaped modern planning thought in Australia, concentrating on the 20th century. It will focus on leading practitioners, advocates, public intellectuals, and community critics in an ideas-centred intellectual history that fills a major knowledge gap. The critical transition away from post-consensus planning in the last 3 decades of the 20th century will be an important focus and linked to a national oral history exercise before the opportunity is lost forever. Contemporary architecture and urbanism in Australia has generally been concerned with addressing 'modernity' while little concerned with specific culture or place, and with little discernable ideology. Consequently, the City of Sydney is much used by international film-makers as an undifferentiated generic metropolis backdrop.
